If you haven’t seen Wes Anderson’s, The Grand Budapest Hotel, it’s well worth watching. It has a great cast, magical cinematography, beautiful colour palette and is ultimately a really fun comedy caper. All his films have a very particular visual style that is hard not to find visually pleasing. This excellent little short highlights one particular troupe, symmetry and centering. I’ve always tried to avoid symmetry and centering when taking photographs or back in school when I was working on art projects, however Anderson utilises it to such great effect that I’m quite inspired by its use. Finally a collection video that actually shows you the collection. No sexualised males or females prancing around here, just one ninja (no not Derek). ACRONYM are always innovating in terms of technical features and functionality, without abandoning aesthetics. I would love to get hands on with some of their stuff because the details seem endless. You’ll need deep pockets if you want to shell out on this stuff and it might be a while before the high street catches up.

You’ve heard of these guys if you’re into design at all. Every little thing that we do online now requires a font - heck, what are you reading right now? Fonts are at the core of what made Apple rise above Microsoft’s Window. Jonathan and Tobias noticed the potential in helping the creatives bring their idea to come life through impactful typefaces for all purposes and situations. They explain the process of starting with the H and O as they’re square and circular letters which paves the way for the rest. Fascinating watch. The attention to detail and patience required to create a typeface is mind-blowing.

All of you, well British folks will be able to identify this famous Channel 4 ident from the 00′s. Well if you pay attention closely, you’ll see how grossly the estate is portrayed in it which is completely inaccurate according to the residents of the Brutalist housing development. The ident includes bin bags, discarded shopping trolleys, plethora of graffiti which was all added in post production to give it a more grimey look. So after a few years of complaints, the Aylesbury residents teamed up with film maker Nick Street to create a realistic portrayal of their estate. More on the reverse.

BACK AGAIN. Dilated. Sorry for the inactivity - I’m going to share what happened to me over the past week in the near future, it’s quite a surreal story but one that deserves to be shared at some point. Everyone’s talking about this show now that House of Cards hype is over and with Matthew McConaughey winning an Oscar - it’s True Detective time. The age of the big budget TV shows with Hollywood A-list stars and True Detective’s title sequence is award worthy. It’s the double exposure imagery consisting of themes, iconography and textures from the show.

The thought of meeting someone for the first time and having to kiss them straight away is kind of scary. I mean yes we do this on a night out however intoxication must have occurred before randomly walking up to someone and kissing them however Tatia Pillieva thinks not. She has created a simple yet kind of beautifully sweet video which sees 20 strangers kiss for the first time. The amateur filmmaker captures the participants actions leading up to the kiss and reactions post kiss. How would you act, would you find it awkward or would you feel comfortable kissing someone you had just met? It may seem shallow but I think looks would be a factor, if the person is super good looking then i’m sure it would be less of a problem, no?

I’m a big Casey Neistat fan, I’ve literally watched every single one of his videos, some multiple times. I’m a geek, what can I say. For those of you not so familiar, you may have at least seen the infamous Bike Lanes or more recently What Would you do with $25,000? His filmmaking comes straight from the heart and always tells a story, two things we always aim to do when creating content here at Yin & Yang. In his latest short film, Neistat tells the story of a touching trip with his son to Machu Picchu. Among other things, it’s certainly excellent travel inspiration. If I haven’t said it enough, I’m itching to wrap things up at uni and see some of the world. Check out the video and be inspired.

Stumbled across this new gem on Tumblr recently. A staff pick from Vimeo (always worth checking out), January in Japan is a short film by Scott Gold (click to check out his website, that’s one hell of a splash page!) documenting his trip to Japan with his wife in January. He visits Tokyo, Kyoto and Yudanaka, and shoots his explorations on his Canon 5D mk3 dSLR (a beast of a camera). The result is absolutely stunning. Graded and edited to perfection. He visits some truly spectacular places and makes a trip to Japan ever more needed. Sit back, relax, and enjoy Scott Gold’s view of Japan after the cut.

No script necessary. Stunning visuals and great chemistry between the lead actor and actress is all you need as this short film displays. It’s an elegantly shot and graded film about two young lovers in the South of France who seem to be enjoying their summer together. It’s like the perfect story of summer love with all the dreamy shots and fast cuts with the music keeps you drawn in till the end. Funnily enough I recognised the actress Coco Baudelle off my Facebook, I still don’t know why she added me as a friend a few years ago but hey. Watch on the reverse.

An art? A Science? A magnificent feat of engineering? Check, check, check. We rarely stop to think what goes into objects we may use everyday. We take for granted the attention to detail, precision and extensive work that is put into, what we now consider, essential items. This is the result of such a fast paced modern existence, however Sigma have created an enchanting short film that briefly slows everything down with some soothing music and documents the fidelity of building a Sigma lens. Check out the video and you’ll definitely think twice before throwing your lenses around in the future!
