Here’s a film trailer to get the hip-hop heads excited. In fact, it’s a trailer to get anyone excited. Straight Outta Compton is an epic new biopic on the story of LEGENDARY rap group N.W.A. Originating from Compton, California, the rap group formed the foundations of West-coast hip-hop. While not everyone is a fan, there is no denying that N.W.A. were one of, if not the, most important rap groups ever. Controversy and politics were always at the forefront of their existence, and is what made them so significant. This biopic looks to focus on that, and tell the story of these history makers. If you haven’t seen Drive, then shame on you! If you haven’t heard the Drive Soundtrack, then double shame on you! If you haven’t heard of the quadrant system however then you’ll be forgiven. The concept involves breaking a frame down into four section (top, bottom, left and right) and utilising those four areas to different effective within a frame. The concept is quite simple but in this breakdown by Tony Zhou you’ll see just how impressive it can be when analysed. Things like this make me want to get into film making! Video after the cut.

‘This is Normal’ is a short film based on a deaf woman Gwen who contemplates undergoing a new surgical procedure to go from totally deaf to completely hearing; and as a result, risks losing her friends and identity. The moral of the film: “Is it worth giving up who you’ve been for the maybe you could become?” More after the break.

Marvel brings the heat with an official teaser trailer for their new Fantastic Four movie. I must say, I found the last one (2005) to be a little bit of a joke, and, as expected, we see a darker more serious angle for the remake ten years on. Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jaime Bell will play versions of Mr. Fantastic, Susan Storm, The Human Torch and The Thing respectively. The foursome develop their powers from a universe exploration trip and, of course, the future of mankind rests on their shoulders. Not sure what to make of it, to be honest. It’s definitely just a teaser, but I’m interested to see where they take the movie as it certainly seems a lot more serious than the previous. In cinemas 7th August. Peep the trailer after the cut.

Fashion films… if you’ve worked on any then you will surely appreciate ‘A Fistful of Wolves’, you might even have given the green light to some of the overdone and melodramatic advertising-models Mercedes – Benz have shamelessly mocked in their latest film to celebrate Berlin Fashion Week 2015 (and promote their C111 car). From the deep and meaningless monologue to the “intense” walk in slow motion to the cliché (but effective) “model getting out of bed” story board; Mercedes have produced probably one of the best fashion films in a while. Watch as Justin O’Shea finds himself caught up in a series of fashion advertising’s finest clichés. Watch after the break.

Usually crafting from scratch, bespoke clothing designer Timothy Everest began his campaign to promote his first ever traditional collection. I’d say he’s headed in the right direction for a first collection, he’s kept it clean and simple focusing on classic everyday style and familiar pieces like parka’s, gillets, tailored chinos and denim which can all be seen in the campaign film. I’m not big on the superhero movies and I’m tired of every successful movie having to become a franchise. However I did love the first Avengers film, perhaps mostly for it’s sense of humour, there are so many quotables, and just the sense of excitement it made me feel. Which is exactly what the new trailer brings back, I mean, how can you not be excited by the prospect of The Hulk fighting a giant robot. Check out the trailer after the SMASH!

If all what’s going on with the police in the states right now isn’t enough to grind your gears, little things like banning (forcefully, of course) subway performers in New York City is also happening. One performance that goes on underground is “litefeet”, a dance style born from breakdancing that was, and still is, a huge part of culture in the Bronx from way back in the 70′s. Directed by Scott Carthy for Nowness, this short film takes a look at one of the litefeet dance crews. I’m not an NYC native, but I’m fully aware that things like this are part of NYC culture and it’s a damn shame that it’s getting taken away. There’s a difference between peacefully dealing with a situation and completely wiping it out - something the powers that be in the US never seem to get right.

Edges of Sanity is a short film by Finisterre, a UK based cold water surf company. It’s a beautifully shot short film that marries poetry with surfing; an unusual combination but it works very well. I especially like how this transcends the stereotypes of what surfers are and provides a little bit of insight into a culture that isn’t widely understood as it adds depth and coming from a brand selling a lifestyle, it’s impressive.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Istanbul; a place I had been wanting to see for a very long time. It was a fun trip with my work over a weekend, so allocating time to travel around in a bigger group other than just me, myself and I, and all the beverage consuming sessions, meant that I had nowhere near enough time to explore the city as much as I would have liked. Safe to say however that in my short stay in Istanbul, it has to be one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. Rich in history and culture, Istanbul shows off its people, traditions, stunning landscapes and (quite terrifying) backstreets during the day. At night, the shisha cafes, coffee shops and endless amounts of rooftop bars get filled to the max. Take a gander at some snaps after the cut, and also check out an incredible short film documenting the rush of exploring Turkey. It’s a must-watch.
