We’re all in that World Cup fever mode now, and despite how much we think they annoy us, we all love the football ads. Pepsi is running a music campaign for the World Cup called ‘Beats of the Beautiful Game’, and in their latest installment, UK icon and man of many talents Idris Elba has directed this rather quirky short movie to the tune of DJ R3hab - Unstoppable. It’s a usual jocks and nerds tale, where the nerd gets another nerd and has an unexpected talent, but I am impressed with the way it’s shot despite the awfully cringy dialogue. What do we think? Imagine a dystopian land where even football is controlled and taken over by drones. Nike dream it up in their latest short, The Last Game. On the lead up to the World Cup, Nike Football unveil the latest in their Risk Everything campaign - this animated film where scientists try to strip the personality (and ‘risk’) from football, and it’s up to Nike Football’s top stars Ronaldo, Rooney and Zlatan to save the beautiful game.

Imagine paying for you calls in Coca-Cola caps. Well for the workers in United Arab Emirates this fictitious idea has come true. Migrant workers who make as little as $6 a day have been separated from their loved ones in order to make money and provide support. This new initiative called Hello Happiness by Coca-Cola aims to connect these workers with their families via a phone call. Phone booths created by the company along with Y&R Dubai essentially work by inserting plastic caps of a Coke bottle. Each cap will allow an international phone call of 3 minutes in length, it’s pretty amazing. Take a look at the short video showcasing the phone booths in action and see the workers light up.

In a bid to prove that their sedans can do more than drop off the kids at school every morning, Nissan lured a bunch of people to the Willow Springs Raceway in California for what they were made to believe would be the ride of their lives in Nissan’s “most advanced Altima race car”. After a few laps around the course, the driver pulled into the pits where passengers were given quite a shock. They looked on sheepishly as staff at the raceway dismantled the said race car to reveal a stock Altima car. It’s a clever little campaign, watch after the break.

What an incredible advert, a simple message relayed through some wonderful storytelling. I’ve been fighting with the fact that a lot of advertising is meaningless, adding consumerist noises to an already noisy world. On the good side of advertising, people create pieces like this that make you look back at your own life and reflect. The story follows a man on his daily routine to work but stopping to help whoever he sees on the road, from helping a lady with her portable market stall, feeding a stray dog and giving money to a homeless child. What does he get in return? You’ll see around the 1:57. It may even bring you to tears.

This is the kind of work I’d like to produce, it’s something I would look back at over the years and say ‘damn I’m still proud of that ad’. Nike India released this short film to celebrate cricket - if you’ve ever been to India, you’ll know what the country is like when it comes to the sport. I’m probably one of a few Indians that doesn’t like the sport but this film has made me want to play. Anywhere. More after the cut.

A few weeks ago Yang posted the “Blowing in the Wind” Apotek Subway Ad, a super cool and innovative advertising board that reacted to the arrival of a train. Well, it looks like they’re not the only brand to reinvent the very traditional method of advertising, as Pepsi Max follow suit. They have installed what they call an “augmented reality experience” at a bus shelter on New Oxford Street to attract the attention of those waiting for the iconic red bus. Watch their reaction as a tiger bounds towards them and a group of UFO’s appears as they look down the street.

Back to normal here at Y&Y towers for now. Quite a few of the team have been on international escapades over the past week, you’ll see soon enough on the site later this month. Speaking of changes and disruption, DHL went about their latest advertising campaign by getting their rivals to advertise for them. This was done through sending cooled blacked out boxes that reacted to day temperatures to reveal its true colours - ‘DHL is faster‘ plastered across it. Genius? Yes. Innovative? Yes. Fake? Possibly but who cares. It’s gone viral and certainly got the awareness the brand were looking for. I wonder how UPS, TNT and DPD feel about this. Smart advertising in this age of mediocrity and easily forgettable social content.

There are some things you think you’ll never see, in some cases just because they are too mad to really consider. However, the guys at Pepsi Max clearly consider everything. Like the possibility of a human running through a loop. They have acquired the talented Damien Walters, famous for this YouTube stunts, gymnastics and parkour, to take on the challenge. I won’t reveal whether or not he achieves the unbelievable. Check the video out on the reverse to find out.
