This is the kind of Kid Cudi music I enjoy. A little bit extrovert, psychedelic and weird. Haha. WZRD is the latest project from the G.O.O.D. music artist Kid Cudi & producer-friend Dot Da Genius and they’re set to unleash their début collaborative project in January 30th. If the album is anything is like his mixtapes and debut record then I’m excited. This track has a horror film vibe with the heavy guitar, real drums and slowly built up vocals.

As Tinie Tempah gets ready to release his much anticipated mixtape ‘Happy Birthday’ in the build up to the release he graces us with an unexpected collaboration which features UK’s very own Wretch 32 and Roc-Nation artist and man of the moment who is also supporting Tinie on tour J. Cole. ‘Like It Or Love It’ sees all three artists going at it, and mind you this track has already set the tone for the mixtape, produced also by UK producer SX.

‘Ten to One‘

Shontelle has been likened with Rihanna on many occasion’s since stepping out with her debut ‘T-Shirt’ and although I think that they are two completely different artists. This latest song from the songstress does nothing to discourage the comparison. It’s the fact that she has moved away from what was a very urban sound to a dancy floor filling sound reminiscent of Miss Fenty. However this is not an official single nor will it appear on Shontell’s next album, it is purely a gift she gave to her fans on thanksgiving to showcase what sounds she has been experimenting with. It’t nothing groundbreaking but it’s nice to hear someone transition to a more uptempo sound without it feeling forced and copycat.

Lupe Fiasco has solidified himself as one of the finest rappers in the game with three brilliant albums, the most recent of which is ‘Lasers’. ‘End of the World’ is off his recent mixtape ‘Friend of the People’ which I am currently listening to, and this track stood out for me. With motivational lyrics and a catchy hook, this track’s play count on my iTunes is guaranteed to rise very quickly. Favourite lyric – ‘The people united will never be defeated’.

Now after how many years I can officially say that the highly anticipated J. Cole album was most definitely worth the wait. The album is kicked off with an Intro, which begins with Jermaine Cole reminiscing on the day he was signed and drifts into is a very subtle composition where he raps about finally making it to this point. Now if you know anything about Jermaine Cole he’s the first signing to the Roc Nation label by Jay-Z himself. For the longest time I’ve been an avid follower, listener and fan of J. Cole, from his first mixtape ‘The Come Up’ Cole had many people in awe of the concepts he addressed from there to now, this album clearly shows the transition and you can see and hear his growth on his released album.

Cole’s album, which was originally supposed to be released last year, was pushed back as he wasn’t sure if he was going to have features on his album and his single release ‘Who Dat’ didn’t go as originally planned. After that minor set back Cole returned with ‘Work Out’ which has had massive support from radio DJ’s.

The Sideline Story sees features from Trey Songz, label boss Jay-Z, Drake, and Missy Elliot. I must admit it’s great to hear Missy again, I’m sure I’m not the only one to agree on that.

Cole World: The Sideline Story marks that Cole is more than just an average rapper tipped off to be the saviour of hip-hop Cole still has a journey ahead of him. To me the album lacked a certain je ne sais quoi but one thing that is evident is Cole has a very bright future ahead of him with the right guidance and management. The lead single Work Out took a good while to grow on me and originally I was disappointed about for the fact that this wasn’t the music from Cole I had grown to like and admire so much. It felt like that single was something that was pushed by the label in bi for him to have some chart popularity. Finally hearing the long awaited colloboration with Hov himself on Mr Nice Watch had me a tad disheartened in the sense that I felt Hov was schooling Cole completely, maybe it was just the fact that Hov has attained so much wealth, so flaunting was easy task on the track, I would have loved to hear Cole give him a run for his acclaimed wealth. However the beat is mental and I do see this song being a favourite in the clubs and constant spin amongst the DJ’s.

A rather confusing moment was hearing Lights Please, in the scene that this is a song that is at least two years old up most but was initially the track that got Cole his deal, so maybe it has some sort of sentimental value.

In saying this Can’t Get Enough is an instant win for me, the beat which has such an inviting Brazilian/Samba feel to it, which invites such a relaxing feeling. One oftens imagines their self abroad on the sandy beach, with a mojito and females in bikini’s, it would have been such a bonus to have had Carlos Santana strumming away on the beat. Throught out the album you can hear Cole’s hunger as he approaches tracks such as Lost Ones with much conviction and passion, songs such as this are one’s that are often turned the blind eye to, as this are the deep meaningful tracks that represent hip hop and what it stands for.

Tracks such as Nobody’s Perfect embraces that soulful era of hip hop that has been very much exctinct in todays market, this song brings Monica – So Gone to mind but much respect to Cole as he clearly shows he’s a force to be reckoned with as a producer and not just a rapper. This song is very much a surprise as we get to hear vocals from the very much missed Missy Elliot, and I must say she adds her blend of creativity to this song.

One thing I will say is don’t listen to the album with “The Saviour of Hip Hop” in mind but merely as him still finding his feet, with time he will rise to that statement. With time he will find his sound as he develops.

All in all Cole World: The Sideline Story is a great album, very much a skip-less album that is a rarity from today’s musicians.

Jhene Aiko (who I remember from the early noughties when she was part of the B2K camp) piqued interest across the internet back in March when she released her brilliant mixtape, Sailing Souls.

Champion of the romantic movement, Jesse Boykins III has given her mixtape cut “Stranger” the remix treatment, turning it into a gorgeous duet. Jhene’s ethereal vocals dance harmoniously next to Jesse Boykins’ soulful croon, making you feel like they’d had to have been in the studio together to create such goodness.

‘I Know You Want Me (Remix)’

DJB and Yang love their dancehall & bashment, me? not so much. I find it funny, like the beats but the vulgarity, overly sexually explicit lyrics and demeaning to women puts me off it. I do adore the beats though and the flow – always wished the dance hall artists would switch it up and make a few cleans songs to see how they do internationally. If Cher Lloyd can get to number 1, I don’t see why this wouldn’t!

R&B’s gentleman (sure!) Ne-Yo jumps on dance hall star Mavado‘s song and the result is infectious. What do you guys think?

‘Only Wanna Give It To You’

During my school, through to college years, I was absolutely obsessed with Hip-Hop and R&B collaborations. The fusion of a female vocalists delicate, sweet sound paired with a rappers overtly-masculine and sometimes aggresive lyrics remind me of long summer holidays, Calippo ice lollies, TN trainers and flasher bus passes. ‘Only Wanna Give It To You’ by soul singer, Elle Varner and rapper, J.Cole just took me back down memory lane!

Here J.Cole who fails to represent, his lyrics are somewhat shallow and cliche. However as an avid fan of his more underground, unsigned material, perhaps I’m too harsh! Regardless, Ella makes up for any of Jermaine’s shortfalls with her strikingly powerful voice! I look forward to hearing more from her in the near future.

Chris Brown is this weeks feature however it is a track from his latest album F.A.M.E that i have selected. Honestly I have two tracks that immediately spring to mind but i’m only going to post the one, who knows maybe in a future SWC i’ll post it if it hasn’t been released. As this song is taken from his current album there is still a possibility of it getting a release however due to its explicit nature I find it and unlikely event. ‘Wet The Bed’ is a perfect example of the growth that Brown has made. Obviously when he first hit the scene we didn’t expect such a song s he was still a minor but as he has grown in age his music has too which is a good thing. Trey Songz sings about sex in nearly all of his songs yet for some reason hasn’t yet made many tracks of this nature that can rival this song or a previous sex related song from Brown tilted ‘Take You Down’. As Brady mentioned in his F.A.M.E album review (see here) this song is a grown up version of Take You Down, take a listen below.

Ya’ll must be thinking WTF? He’s not been around long enough to warrant a Throwback Thursdays post. Well I feel his debut album (2004!) was overlooked by many and most of these stans only showed up after he hit the gym and started singing about sex all the time. He had a bit more variety in his earlier albums, the first will always be one of my favourites. It’s just so raw and refreshing when I first listened to it back in ’04, I never knew blogs existed and didn’t use music forums. I always used Amazon and checked ‘similar artists’ for new music to torrent. Fact: I left my PC on for 3 days to download the ‘I Gotta Make It‘ album. So after the cut for songs from the album before Trey made it.

Only the real fans will know of these songs, this is the Trey when he was just starting out his hustle. Mind you he had a few mixtapes before this with the name ‘Prince of Virginia’ but I haven’t been able to locate them! This album has some great songs, I would actually link you to all of them but I’ve picked out my favourites.

1. Trey Songz – All The Ifs

‘It’s like my sun won’t shine/It’s like my ride don’t roll
It’s like the only one thing I love/Don’t love me no more’

Beautiful. Easily one of the best songs of his career, it depicts the aftermath of relationship and the emotion felt when love is last as all you can do is ponder what went wrong hence the title ‘All The Ifs‘. Scott Storch production, you’d have never guessed.

2. Trey Songz – Ur Behind

‘Shawty I want you so so bad
You running through my mind
All I see ur behind’

Ok so maybe he did have a few sex-filled tracks. This is a definite one for the clubs, the bass & beat is dope! and the lyrics = all about a ladies behind, picture Kim Kardashian’s behind.

3. Trey Songz – Just Gotta Make It

‘Shorty, all I got is a dollar and a dream
Is ya gonna roll wit me? (roll wit me)
You see I’ve tried a 9 to 5, and it just don’t fit me (fit me) (no way)’

His first ever music video and first track of the album, his vocals are smooth and the beat isn’t too slow. I like the lyrical content even if he tries to come across as ‘hood’,   it’s all about making it and giving his girl what she deserves. It’s a feel good song. I know just I gotta make it.

4. Trey Songz – Hatin Love

‘She was like the devil in disguise,
Spending time with me and thinking of other guys,
And even though I tried my best,
I cant describe the way she made me feel,
All over a girl, who never gave her all’

Last one for today’s post folks, I’m really going in with the slow jams haha. This track is all about being in a relationship with a chick who’s playing you silly, when love goes totally wrong. It’s probably one of the best vocal songs on the album, he delivers it with great range and emotion.

I’m sorry for being late again with this post! it has been almost 3 weeks since my last Eargasms but working life really took over my life. I’m switching it up this time as I’ve picked an alternative song to headline the post. I heard this song in GANT Rugger‘s lookbook video and instantly fell in love. That song and many more after the cut.

It was honestly my favourite track off that album – the beat, vocals, lyrics go so well together. He doesn’t over do it with the sex-fuelled lyrics either, well not as bad as some of his other songs!

No auto-tune. This is what you call real talent. Bluey Robinson jumps on Cee-Lo‘s infectious track ‘Fuck You’ and actually does the song justice. It’s been on repeat all morning on my iTunes. It’s the first remix of the song that is actually worth listening to, the 50 Cent and Chiddy Bang remixes were offensive/waste of time to listen to.

Now onto Chiddy Bang, a cut of their debut album leaked last week. Including the new single ‘Good Life’ produced by Pharrell, I’m still a bit unsure about this track. It’s catchy but the lyrics lack substance and the wordplay isn’t that great. I feel their remixes with Xaphoon’s ill production work is doper than this but man I’m looking for the good life.

Discovered this track a few weeks back. The Jaz featuring Jay-Z at a very young age. Back in 1991, HOV’s flow was still there but I can’t help but LOL.

Yang: Amede Soundsmith is 20 year old singer/song writer from East London. He began singing and song writing from the age of 10 being influenced by R&B artists such as Joe.. Here I have his first single “without you” a soft R&B track with an electro influence.

Alternative Ish

Lifehouse were one of my favourite bands when I was back in high school! but I never listened to their first album so this song was a bit of a shock to me. They were a Christian band, can you believe that? Check out this song titled ‘Everything‘, it’s moving and I’m not even religious. As you can tell it’s 03:23 am and I can’t be asked to expand. Haha.

Rumours have been running rife as of late concerning the management of the delectable Beyonce Knowles. According to earlier reports Mathew Knowles (dad of Beyonce) has been relieved of his duties as her manager and just last week it was reported that husband Jay-Z was to take charge of his wife’s career.

Rumours actually came to fruition when the revelations of Mathews sordid affair came to light confirming that he did indeed impregnated another woman whilst still with Tina Knowles. It was suggested that Beyonce was very upset and embarrassed by her fathers actions that she no loner wanted to speak to him. Considering the very close relationship, both personal and professional, Beyonce has with her mother such reports were not hard to believe.

However this past week has seen an official press release from Music World Entertainment thrown into public domain addressing Knowles’ management situation. It has been confirmed, in the statement presented, on behalf of the label by Mark Young, that the singer is in fact still represented by her father and not by husband Jay-Z. Read the statement below:

“Contrary to false rumors online, Beyoncé and her manager Mathew Knowles unequivocally have had and continue to have a close personal and business relationship. Mathew Knowles is the sole and exclusive manager of Beyoncé.”

Merry Christmas II You

Two weeks ago I informed you all that Mariah Carey is planning to release a follow up to her hugely successful 1994 Christmas album Merry Christmas. Details surrounding the upcoming project have been sought after, Rap-Up were able to gather more information on the new record. Check out what news Rap-Up had to share regarding the album:

Rap-Up.com has exclusively learned that Mimi’s upcoming holiday project will be called Merry Christmas II You. The II represents the follow-up to 1994’s multi-platinum Merry Christmas album, which spawned the now-classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The new offering is scheduled for a November 2 release and will include original material as well as covers of holiday classics.

An accompanying DVD will also be released the same day, but there are currently no details on what exactly it will contain. The packaging was shot in the spring by famed photographer David LaChapelle and features a festive setting with fake snow, tinsel, and wooden reindeers.

Mariah’s manager Chris Lighty tweeted that she is working with the Home Shopping Network (HSN) to promote the project, which is guaranteed to be the perfect stocking stuffer.

Let’s all just hope and pray that the album turns out to be a Mariah classic and if it is then let us hope that sales will match its greatness. We all know that Mariah can sang the hec out of a song but recent releases just haven’t performed as well as expected although I must say I was very saddened that Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel didn’t do well as I felt it was a song RnB album.

A New Lauryn Hill Album Anyone?

I am led to believe that all is right with the world because musical genius Lauryn Hill has hinted at the release of a new album in the near future. Since this would be her first album in over 10 years miss Hill has stated that she doesn’t intend to collaborate with the popular music acts currently in the game as she would like the record to be all about her vision and sound.

Whatever she wants to do with the album is fine by me at this moment in time as I’m just ecstatic that we are going to be hearing new material. Peep what miss Hill had to say in this short video.

Oh Dear T.I

Trouble, controversy and strife seem to follow T.I where ever he goes. Fresh from his year long prison sentence the rapper has gone a got him self into another spot of bother. This week he and his wife Tiny were arrested for possession of controlled substances. Though formal charges haven’t yet been pressed and the couple have been released on bail this latest run in with the law could see TIP having to deal with the prospect of facing an extended period of time in jail.

His lawyer Steven Knowles has spoken on the matter:

Lawyer Steven Knowles suspects that, if convicted, T.I. could face a multiple-year jail sentence. “This is big-time,” Knowles told Yahoo! Music. “I really don’t envy his defense lawyer.”

Prior to serving three months in the halfway house, T.I. spent seven months in a federal prison in Arkansas for illegal firearms possession and possessing a gun as a convicted felon.

According to the Associated Press, as a condition of his three-year-parole, he was forbidden from committing another federal, state or local crime, or illegally possessing a controlled substance. Drug tests and participation in a drug and alcohol treatment program were also required.

The new allegations will not be taken lightly, said Knowles, a family attorney who has represented Britney Spears and Nicole Kidman, among others. “[T.I.'s] celebrity is not likely going to get him off of this,” he said. “This is now a repeated offense. That’s when even the celebrity get-out-of-jail card is not going to work.”

Knowles believes T.I.’s celebrity will probably ensure a more stringent ruling. “In fact, for them to take it light on him now would look like over-favoritism because he’s a celebrity, and I think, if anything, his celebrity may actually backfire.”

Knowles believes that Cottle, co-star of BET’s Tina & Toya and a member of the ‘90s R&B group Xscape, could avoid jail time because of their children. “That is a big factor when it comes to sentencing,” he said. “I can tell you from my experience as a family lawyer that celebrity or not, courts loathe to jail moms, particularly if there’s not going to be a dad at home to care for the kids as well. This would mean kids would have no parents.”

One important factor in determining a potential sentence will be the quantity of drugs in possession. “If [the] quantity is large enough to be selling or even sharing with third parties, that could make a big difference,” Knowles said

I really do hope that he doesn’t get into serious trouble for this latest misdemeanour and he can get his act together but I guess there are only so many second chances a man can be given. Saying that I don’t know the full details so I will keep my opinion on the matter hidden for now. People pray for T.I I’m sure he could use it right now.

Cheryl Cole’s New Single

Cheryl Cole is set to release her first official single titled ‘Promise This’ taken from her sophomore album. The single celebrates her triumph over the Maleria disease which she contacted earlier this year whilst on holiday in Tanzania with Derek Hough.

The Track is said to relate to the time that she spent in intensive care. Her first live performance of the song and probably first live performance since contracting the disease will come in the second week of the X-factor live shows.

An insiders comment:

“It was actually written months ago and although it’s not directly talking about her illness there is a strange lyrical twist that ironically relates to her recent near-death experience. It is similar to the way ‘Fight For This Love ’related to her marriage drama.”

New Track Alert

Today I will leave you with another new track. I’m sure it will make an appearance in an Eargasms post in the near future but I thought I’d share it with you first.

This track comes from Mr steal your girl himself Trey Songz featuring Drake. I will confess that upon first listen I am not completely feeling the song. I feel that it hasn’t match up to let alone surpass the heights of the pairs last collaborate Successful. The material that has leaked from Trey’s upcoming album I haven’t been impressed with and I feel it is a little rushed. When I heard that he was to drop a new album in September my immediate response was why? After the leaked material I still find my self asking the same question. Let’s just hope that the album will at least be as good as Ready.

It has been a fortnight so it’s time for me to update ya’ll with my favourite R&B and Hip-Hop songs that I have added to my iTunes library in the past 2 weeks. Starting off with my most played song in the past few weeks, Cee-Lo‘s ‘Fuck You’. His managed to use such a disrespectful song and managed to make it sound damn good. The song is 60s/70s esque, it has that timeless feel to it. Much much more on the flipside.

Last week I dedicated Throwback Thursdays to the King of R&B, R.Kelly. His music has gone some what down hill in the past 5 years, it’s just not as good as it used to be. Saying that I did like his World Cup song and these 2 leaks from his upcoming project are pretty good. Especially ‘She Knows What She Wants’ featuring Rick Rozay. In my opinion it’s one of his better songs in the past 5 years.

I never really liked this guy’s music as I’m not a fan of UK ‘Grime‘ but this a bit more mainstream and I’m kinda sure it’s gonna blow up in the charts. Guess who’s on the hook? DJ Yasmin. I never knew she could sing, just adds to the array of her talents. For me, she makes this song with her soft vocals in the chorus.

I hope that track is not on Cudi’s new album. I hate that repetitive hook, it sounds like he’s high on some substance. In my opinion Kid Cudi‘s mixtape before he got famous is still without a doubt his best work.

Rap’s first lady is back with a new single after a few years of hiatus. She hasn’t lost her voice that’s for sure, the song is beautiful. Her new album ‘Something About Faith’ is set to drop on October 5th.

Tinie Tempah unveiled the 3rd single off his upcoming album ‘Disc-overy‘ earlier this week and umm it’s catchy? like his last two singles. Lyrically? awful like his last two singles. Another radio friendly single which is bound to do well in the charts. The public most definitely risked it for a chocolate biscuit with the last two.

Apparently this is of an upcoming mixtape ‘In My Zone 2‘ or it might be an unreleased cut off his previous album. It definitely fits into the mould of the last, single guy missing his ex and can’t get over her. It’s an alright song from Breezy – I’m a big fan of piano slow jams. Maybe it’s because I used to play the piano? That’s something ya’ll didn’t know about me.

Our friends over at SoulCulture TV caught up with Kevin Liles in Paris during the media launch of his new Def Jam Rapster game. For those that don’t know who Kevin is, he’s the former executive vice president of Warner Music and was also president of Def Jam Recordings. During the interview he talks about his Def Jam days, on how he become Trey Songz manager and what he’s doing to mentor young America. Interesting piece, view it after the cut.
