I thought I’d sneak in and steal this week’s one while the boys (DJB, the current champion of Throwback Thursdays, and Yin) weren’t looking. This week the internet has been abuzz with footage and glowing reviews from soul icon D’Angelo‘s European tour, taking place after the crooner took a 12 year hiatus. Personally, rather than being excited at news of his return, I was skeptical; many a super-talented icon has ‘returned’ to the stage to lacklustre effect (Lauryn Hill, anyone?) so I didn’t rush to get tickets for his London dates (happening this upcoming weekend February 3rd/4th). This time though, my skepticism led to me missing out on what’s set to be an electric show, so while I kick myself, you kick back and reminisce to this classic cut from his album Brown Sugar.

Today was one of those days where I couldn’t decide on what song to use so I decided to call on the help of Yin to help me selected one song out of a possible 4 or 5. We ended up selecting a song but since then i’ve changed my mind and have now selected this Toni Braxton classic (no not that one). Peep what Braxton song I have chosen when you read on.

So I was at work (yes I have a job other than Y&Y) and I heard these songs playing on the computer, I immediately texted Yin to remind me to use them for Throwback Thursday as I have quite a terrible memory. You know when you hear a tune and it just take you back, yh that happened to me. I totally zoned out and started rocking to these songs as if I was the only person in the store. Usually i’d select just one song to take you down memory lane however im worried that i’ll forget to choose the other song I have in mind next week so i’m gonna give y’all two this week. Click the read on button and get ready to groove to some good ol classics.

I had to snatch this one out of the hands on Yin a good 24 hours before release as he’s slowly becoming the Throwback King. I had to put an end to his reign because whilst he trying hard, he can never topple me for that status lol. Anywho enough with the in house banter, let’s get down to business with todays trip down memory lane. 90′s R&B is always a good place to start when thinking of a song to select on a Thursday and it just so happens that while I was trying to think of 90′s R&B tracks this song came on via my iTunes. This song was released in 1999 and reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and I would say that it’s one of two really notable songs from the girl group 702. Find out which song it is after the cut.

Yes, jacked this post again! I’m going to feature the song that I was initially going to post up last week. It’s one of two songs that I downloaded as soon as I installed Sean Parker’s Napstar in ’99. Those early teen years where I really didn’t understand that I was doing something illegal and I’m not sure if I should freely admit that now since they’ll probably want me to fine for the activity. Hmm, too late. 56k was the bane of my life back then, they way it would disconnect whenever someone answered the house phone! not to mention a single song took around 30-40 minutes to download. The song is by a Jamaican and nope, not Sean Paul. BOMBASTIC – hop on after the cut.

Decided to quickly jump at the opportunity to take this post off DJB‘s hands! I was going to go with the first ever track I downloaded illegally off a P2p but it’s Christmas. So it’s only right to take it all the way back to the 70s with this track from Donny Hathaway. You’ve all heard it before, well at least a cover version as everyone from Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross to even Chris Brown have covered this classic. Nothing beats the original. Who’s feeling festive?

*inserts DJB singing here* The song that I have selected for this week’s Throwback Thursday always leaves me whistling or humming the beat after i’ve heard it. It’s one of those tunes that gets stuck in your head for days but yet you don’t mind. I was inspired to select this song because of Project Alfie, I was thinking of what songs I think he should do a re take on and this was one of the songs I thought of. The song I have chosen is ‘Regulate’ by Warren G featuring Nate Dogg, R.I.P Nate.
