A group of ‘Urban Explorers’ managed to climb to the top of The Shard undetected, the insanity…! I found this website through twitter over the weekend and I’ve read some pretty interesting articles. These guys document and photograph what they call ‘urban explorations’, from what I have gathered- they basically explore places they really should not be exploring…legally. Most recently, they set their sights on London’s very own ‘Shard’. In the article they talk about they infiltrated the presumably secure building site and made their way to the top partly undetected. The article in it self is pretty amusing and the photos are amazing… they’re not super high quality but they sure as hell reinforces the idea of London being gorgeous by night. More after the break.

Hello, it’s been a while since I last posted someone else’s work to get your creative juices flowing. LA-based photographer Dave Hill beautifully captures a variety of music artists in really crisp 35mm and medium format images. A lot of people use B&W as a scapegoat to save their photographs from extreme noise levels of shooting colour in low-light situations but when done properly like this, it’s incredible. Dave’s renowned for his digital cinematic composites and creative Photoshop skills but with this range of photographs, he strips it all away and let’s the tones & shades do the talking. More imagery on the reverse,  my favourite has to be the G-Unit & Emery shots!

It’s that time of the year where my productivity at work decreases by 27%…It must mean the announcement of Sony’s World Photography Awards. Photography is a passion and hobby for many however the majority like myself have never considered the thought of pursuing a career in the field. The World Photography Organisation (WPO) supports professional (and more importantly), amateur and student photography by lending a global platform to showcase their work in photojournalism, fine art and commercial photography. On Tuesday 20th March the Open & Youth category winners, Moving Image/3D Award Shortlist and the Tate Collectives competition winners were announced. Check out my favourites after the break.

U.K.-based Mark Neville has captured London in a very different light. I don’t quite know how to explain if I’m honest, he’s gone about photography awkward social situations around the city. For example, the one woman in the crowd at Boujis – you already know what kind of place this is from the name, a pretentious Kensington club. From December 2011 to January 2012, Mark traveled around the city capturing the most diverse set of photographs from nightlife, to kids playing, banking and communities. I don’t know what it is about this set of photographs, they just look so raw and natural. In fact you would never guess that these were taken in 2011/2012 – looks like the 80s to me! hop on after the cut.

I stumbled across this open-air street gallery on the way to lunch in Goodge Street. Located right in the heart of Fitzrovia, “Where Creativity Loves” is an open air installment run and judged by Diemar/Noble Photography. The competition was open to anyone with a camera, both professionals and amateurs and from the hundreds of submissions – they’ve picked the best ones to be displayed around the HUGE building site for Fitzroy Place; a gigantic housing complex. What caught my eyes was the presentation of the photography, it’s so colourful and glossy – it’ll definitely catch anyone’s attention as they pass by. Why can’t they do this with all the ugly building sites? I noticed quite a few people stop and stare at the images, most intriguing was one man who looked through the gap in one of the photographs. Hop on after the cut to see more images.

The use of camera phones has gone from taking drunken photos on a bender to full on photography, it’s amazing how accessible photography is nowadays. We’ve seen lens attachments for camera phones before so this is nothing new, but the great thing about this one is that it is universal so it’s compatible with most smart phones not just iPhones! Plus it’s super portable, literally unnoticeable and you can even attach it to some built-in webcams….well it works on macs. With a cool fish eye effect, the Mujjo fisheye lens will transform your photos and it will only cost you £10! More info after the break.

Woah something peaceful yet so dark about this self-taught photographer‘s work. Meet Prague-based photographer Martin Stranka – before you start complaining about how heavily edited his work is, get over it. It’s still photography! he’s managed to capture dreamy visuals and enhance them to a state that the image looks so CALM. All the models are mid-air, caught in a moment positions – it’s hard to explain, you just have to see it for yourself. He says his photography started because of some unhappy moments in life and he needed a way to express himself. I can definitely see that tinge of darkness in this work, these character’s look calm but yet so lost in their journeys. That’s my interpretation, what do you guys think?
