So what happens when Nike‘s designer director of Apparel wants to make the best product possible? You go to Italy as it’s the logical place for fine product making. The NSW designers traveled to Italy to work on this year’s ‘Made In Italy‘ collection – last year’s was Tennis inspired and this one is inspired by last year’s key sporting moment – the Rugby World Cup with the grey ‘1823 Rugby Shirt‘ as the star of this collection. What makes this collection so special in comparison to the rest of Nike’s NSW range? It’s all in the details. I actually shot the flat shots for them so the garments were with me for enough time for me to realise why it stands out. A variety of new materials, stitching and trim have been used to construct this collection, heck even the weight of the collection is much lighter. Hop on after the cut.

follow me on twitter

I’m still a bit 50/50 on the Destroyer Trench; the fusion between the varsity and trench coat silhouettes is a little odd. I’d struggle to style it but hey that’s me. You guys probably saw a few images on Hypebeast yesterday – below you’ll get to see all the images I shot, including some close ups of the different types of fabrics and stitching. The first tennis-inspired ‘Made In Italy‘ collection dropped around Wimbledon time, this one will launch on Sunday 19th February at the height of the Six Nations tournament. GO ENGLAND. You’ll be able to cop the collection at most Selfridges, Nike’s 1948 space, Hanon, End and Oki Ni.

Best believe I shot this collection in my office during lunch break. God bless inner city architecture, dirty windows and sunlight. Oh and a bit of Photoshop.

This has to be my favourite piece. Even tried it on halfway through the shoot, it reminds me heavily of the jacket in Drive.

Style counts hence why I don’t compromise my style by going to the gym and embarrassing myself. I kid, honestly. On the side of Make It Count campaign, Nike was secretly hyping up its latest addition to its innovative Nike+ technology – the FuelBand. Remember the Live Strong/Stand-Up/Speak Up bands that were all the rage back in A-level days – it fits exactly like that but has the tech to provide a common metric as it tracks ALL your physical activities. Nike+ tech originally started out as product made especially for runners but the FuelBand tracks what the brand calls NikeFuel (what’s with the lack of spacing!?), which lets folks compare a football match to skateboarding. It’s basically gamifying all your activities; enabling us to measure up and compete with our friends who specialise in others. Nice. More on the reverse.

follow me on twitter

All this hype for a band? What! No I dig it. I’ve seen a lot of hate for it on social networks, people think it’s pointless. Get over it, I genuinely like it. It’s exactly like the rest of the campaign that motivates and inspires you to be more fit. The users can set daily NikeFuel goals and the FuelBand uses red, yellow, green colours to let users know how they’re doing towards that goal. Obviously with any type of competition mechanic, there is social integration with Twitter and Facebook so users can show off their scores. They’ve also announced partnerships with Foursquare and Path, interesting to see what the latter is about. I’m still not convinced by that network, it just looks nice.

The band itself tracks activity through oxygen kinetics, which helps it determine whether a user is engaged in an intense sporting activity or sitting at a desk. Nike believes this will provide more precise measurement than simply tracking steps, and allow it to account for the differences across various sports (the device also tracks steps, calories, and time, however).

Will you be buying to #makeitcount? It all depends on the price to be honest. They have to get it right, I think around £60-70 would be alright. I can’t wait to get my hands on one, may actually motivate me to move a muscle or two. It’s not out here in the UK yet – hold tight, we’ll let you know when it’s available.

So last night, a few of us ventured down to Nike‘s Make It Count exhibition launch in Shoreditch. As you’ve probably realised already, I’m pretty fond of this campaign. So much so that I wrote an essay of a post dissecting each of W+K‘s media channels used for the campaign. You can read it here, if I had the time; I’d have loved to dissect the sociological aspects for using such inspire and motivate methods to grab people’s attention. That would require a hell of a lot research as it’s something that I know very little about. Sigh, I’ve blabbed on. The event was a private viewing of the exhibition space with the photographer Adam Hinton showcasing the Nike athlete portraiture for the campaign. More on the reverse.

follow me on twitter

As always with a campaign launch, half the speaking was industry talk between the agency and representatives that worked together to create this wonderful body of work from the marketing through to Adam Hinton’s photography. It’s so simple, black & white images captures of stern faced, determined individuals. No fancy photoshopping or colour grading involved.

We ended up staying there till 9pm. Got carried away catching up with the familyand meeting some new faces. Win. If you’re in the Shoreditch area, why don’t you go check out 1948 and make your own pledge?

Details on where and when below:

Arches 477 – 478 Bateman’s Row
Shoreditch
London
EC2A 3HH

So the campaign launched around 2 weeks ago but I held back from posting it till now to see how well the public will receive. With the London 2012 Olympics starting in less than 200 days, what could a super brand that isn’t an official sponsor do to thwart people into thinking that it is one? Create a campaign using key GB sports influencers with a simple call-to-action that urges the public to join in. That’s exactly what Nike has done. I salute you, Wieden + Kennedy London.

follow me on twitter

Bit of background information, Nike executives laid out the companies plans for the current fiscal year to its investors and analysts, and listed connecting more directly with consumers as one of the company’s main goals. This also included updating the God awful website that Nike had, all the flash sites are being replaced with HTML5 – hallelujah. Nike’s CEO commented on the company’s progress late last year -

“Social media is helping us unite and expand,” he says. “We have never been closer to our consumers, as they connect more with each other, their heroes and their favorite teams.” – Mark Parker, President/CEO

Nike has launched this new campaign that urges we all step up our game in 2012 and ‘Make it Count’. This multi-media channel campaign features a number of the UK’s top athletes making personal pledges, this includes the likes of Mo Farah, Jack Wilshere, Rio Ferdinand, Mark Cavendish and more. Dope quotes was inspired by the constant bombardment of inspirational and uplifting quotes on Twitter. I don’t know how it all started but for me, reading one quote that I can relate to will suddenly inspire me to work harder and help me refocus on my purpose. Especially since the internet is full of distractions, it’s nice to come across a quote that will remind you of what you have to do. Instead of sitting there waiting for your Twitter feed to refresh.

Until the launch of this campaign, @Nike never had an official Twitter account. It has several separate accounts for each of its division but now for the first time, the company has a single voice tweeting on behalf of the entire brand. It seems like they’ve tied down a deal with social network to customise their page with a giant banner (see image above). The first tweet from the account is a quote from the founder:

If You Have A Body, You Are An Athlete. -Bill Bowerman

Peep a few of the print posters below, you may have seen them across billboards, underground stations, magazines, newspapers and on storefronts around the city.

As you can see at the bottom of the posters, they encourage everyone else to join in with a simple call to action and make a pledge via the b #makeitcount. Adam Hinton’s photography mixed with the bold Futura and handwritten typography works so well together. I love the personal touch, it’s nice to see the individual’s handwriting. It’s such a simple idea and launching it in January is the best possible time. I just find it incredible how they’ve managed to get the Olympics thought across without actually mentioning it. I’m sure it’s the first thought that came into your minds when you glanced at the posters too?

The videos are just like the posters, simple editing with an inspirational message from the athletes. It’s not quite as engaging as the posters for me, a little bland if I do say so myself. View them all here.

The website for the campaign is so simple but effective as it simply urges viewers to tweet. Nothing more, nothing less.

But the campaign doesn’t end there. Come on now, we’re talking about Nike. It’s definitely a social-focused campaign but what’s the next step? Instagram. The company also launched it’s very own profile on the rapidly growing mobile social network. With the help of my favourite photographer and Instagram legend, 13th Witness – the brand launched the campaign on the network with a series of photographs using the hashtag. So far there have been over 1500 photographs tagged with the #makeitcount tag, not much but it’s still pretty decent for IG. I’m scouring the internet in search of tweet stats but none available for free at the moment. Lame. Hashtracking came up with the following for the past 24 hours:

1,500 tweets generated 959,921 impressions, reaching an audience of 628,636 followers within the past 24 hours

Now Nike doesn’t stop there. They’ve taken it one step further, a physical interactive installation in each of Nike’s big stores. If you go into Niketown on Oxford Street, you can create your own pledge photograph. I’ve been in and seen a mini-studio constructed on the ground floor where you’ll be able to create a pledge like the one above (Found on Tumblr!). I might just do one, not sure what my pledge would be. ‘Blog more, tweet less’

Lastly if you’re interested in seeing more of the photography from the campaign, you’ll be able to do so from Wednesday at Nike’s 1948 store in Shoreditch. There will be an exhibition of Adam Hinton’s portrait photography like the ones below. Right I’m off to bed, jog in the morning whilst preparing for my presentation. How will you make it count?

After reading the very insightful and inspiring Jeff Staple collaboration post yesterday, I developed a deeper perspective on how we should all be open to collaboration and sharing our ideas/talents to create greatness. It also gave me a greater respect for brands who collaborate with others to create great products. Nike have always led the way in the sports world and have always been at the helm of creating products that have benefited from unique collaborations. So I decided to feature Gyakusou fall/winter high-performance running collection which is a collaboration between Nike and Japanese Undercover founder Jun Takahashi. Check out the collection after the jump

follow Eniola on twitter

For all of you who have made New years resolutions to get fitter and do more running, I would encourage you to go to Niketown and invest in some Gyakusou running gear so you can get fit and sweaty but look stylish all at the same time. With the Olympics only round the corner, I have been following a rigorous training regime so I ordered some Gyakusou gear from Nike just before Christmas. The task of burning off all the jollof rice, fried rice, chicken and other Nigerian delicacies that I ate over Christmas was a daunting one, but I put on my Gyakusou gear and felt ready to run. Sounds cheesy but it is true. It makes a difference when you are running in gear that is lightweight and made for high performance but most importantly makes you want to run because it makes you look and feel good.

The Gyakusou collection is rooted in a simple philosophy that is focused on fulfilling a crucial mission: To create the best running product that strikes a perfect balance between style and absolute functionality. The lightweight jackets are a great example of the collections functional, running inspired design. I particularly like the skin tight jog pants also known as ‘skins’, which allow you to run with a sense of freedom and lightness on the legs.

The collection reflects Takahashi’s mission to improve his performance as a runner in the streets and parks of Tokyo with the Gyakosou International Running Association. So the promotion video has a gritty outdoors feel to it which is based on the concept of Japanese running monks. I love it. Check it out.

Some Friday reading for y’all who commute to work like me. Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration – that’s all you see and hear nowadays between brands, bloggers, celebrities but how many of them are actually successful? Adidas x David Beckham, Jordan and Nike, Uniqlo and Jil Sander to name a few. Jeff Staple who is a man of many talents; product and apparel designer, entrepreneur, blogger, visionary and probably more. He speaks on the background of collaboration and more importantly explains when it is a collaboration isn’t actually one. He also gives us insight into his work with Nike, what the different types of collabs are and what makes a successful one. Read the full article from Antenna magazine after the cut, trust me it’s worth reading.

follow me on twitter

So if you want to collaborate with us/me, feel free to hit me up on yin@yinnyang.co.uk

As soon as man could make things, man was collaborating.

When the first caveman discovered fire, one person found the wood, the other worked the flame. Centuries later, the blacksmith needed to work with the leathersmith in order to make that perfect belt. Long before the word “collaboration” or “colab” was invented, we were collaborating.

The reason is simple. As humans, we are adept at only a certain number of skill sets. Even so called “Renaissance people” are not masters at everything. Eventually we need help. There are two kinds of help: we can simply pay for the help, otherwise known as “work-for-hire,” or we can collaborate. When you collaborate, you’re basically saying, “Hey bro, I’m really good at X, but I suck at Y. You, on the other hand are really good at Y, but you’re miserable at X. If we come together, we might be able to do some amazing things!”

The result is an epiphany. A yin and a yang forming one. Taking the best of the negatives and turning them into positives. Fast forward a few more centuries and we now live in the digital/technological/informational age. Our outputs are no longer only physical objects, but they are experiences now too. People make a living by offering opinions, or by having a certain number of people “follow” and “like” them. It’s a new day where your thoughts are the commodity.

Even with all that, the basic premise of the collaboration is the same.
Nowadays a corporation will seek the services of a cool artist, influencer or designer to work with them on a product. Why?

The reasons are transparent. A limited edition production run of something will not make or break the publicly-traded behemoth of a corporation. Why would a mega-corp make 30 pieces of something, or make something that only sells in one boutique?
It’s so the corporation can gain some sort of credibility in a market it currently cannot access or reach. Meanwhile, the “cool-guy” probably lives and breathes the aforementioned unattainable subset. So what do they do? They collaborate.

Company X says, “Hey ‘cool-guy,’ we know you can’t make a car/shoe/sunglass/bottle of alcohol/denim jacket/snowboard, etc. And for the life of us, we can’t get your friends to try out our stuff. So maybe we can help each other out here…”
And thus you have the 21st century collaboration.

I may be sounding cynical about it, but in all honesty these colabs can offer up some amazing innovation, product design and in some rare cases, even change the world. Unfortunately, many many companies now see it as a requirement to do a collaboration. It’s now literally a line item in their annual marketing budget. If they DON’T do a collaboration, it’s viewed as a wasted opportunity. This to me is completely ludicrous.

It should be obvious to anyone that by nature of the definition of the word “collaboration,” it cannot happen this way. Collaborations—or at least GREAT ones—happen organically and naturally. They are not forced into a calendar and a PowerPoint presentation. Great collaborations don’t start in boardrooms. They start in restaurants. They start with conversation. They start with mutual respect. They start with a common goal that, together, they can work towards achieving.

Often times, what gets mistaken for a collaboration is actually a “work-for-hire” project. These are based around set budgets, set timelines and set expectations. At the end of the day creativity, passion and what’s truly best for both parties, must take a back seat to those parameters.

I also want to quickly address a new phenomenon that has recently occurred that often gets mistaken for a collaboration. It’s called a “licensing deal.” When you see a brand do a project with a cartoon character, or an artist that has been deceased for many decades—this is not a collaboration. The arrangement is this: brand says to cartoon intellectual property owner, “let us use your trademarks and art. We’ll create some cool shit with it. You can approve it. And then whatever we sell, you will receive a percentage of sales (e.g., royalties).” A legal document must be drafted and signed. And often times, the trademark owner will impose a minimum amount of sales or a minimum guarantee on royalties. Doesn’t sound very collaborative does it? It’s because it’s not. I just want to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing a licensing deal. I’ve done them before in the past. I just don’t like when they are called colabs. It then degrades the things that go into an actual collaboration.

I hope that in the future, the idea of collaboration will go back to its pure form. That is: two people/companies/entities sitting down, sharing a great meal and bouncing ideas off of each other. The objective is not to finish dinner with a “plan of attack.” The idea is to share. You see how this is very different than having a “creative” meeting in a conference room that starts at 9:15am and must have a hard-stop at 10:10am. THAT’S NOT A COLAB!

Great colabs are the stuff of MAGIC. It’s alchemy in a bottle. It’s creating something from nothing. And I’m not talking about a physical product; I’m talking about an entirely new way of thinking—for both parties. That is some special shit that doesn’t happen very often. At my companies, Staple Design (www.stapledesign.com) and Reed Space (www.thereedspace.com), we’ve had the pleasure of creating many collaborations. But we’ve done “work-for-hire” projects as well as a few licensing projects. Maybe because I’ve had experiences with all of these, it is very important to me that they are properly delineated.

If I start talking about all the different projects we have done in the past, it would fill this entire magazine, so I’ll just highlight one and that is—The Pigeon. Our Pigeon trademarked logo was born out of a collaborative project with Nike to create a pair of Nike SB Dunks that was dedicated to the city of New York. The brief from Nike was that simple–create a shoe for NYC. This project took over two years to come to light. I wasn’t pissed. Nike wasn’t pissed. It was just going to happen when the planets aligned. This allowed for our design process to be very fluid and organic. It might sound really cheesy, but I believe that the story and concept for your product needs time for it to marinate into your product.
Because we were given this flexibility, and because the powers that be at Nike allowed for this to happen, conditions were prime. When the Pigeons were released to the public—history was made.
You couldn’t have drawn up a better plan even if you had the world’s smartest and most strategic people working on this campaign. Why? Because it wasn’t a campaign. It was a collaboration, in the purest sense of the word.

I can confidently say that if Nike never approached us to do that shoe, to this day, there would not be a Pigeon on a sneaker…or any of the other things we’ve applied the Pigeon mark to. And I can also confidently say that if Nike didn’t approach us to make that shoe, that to this day, Staple Design would not have been able to make a shoe as good as the Dunk. So in essence we needed each other. It’s been a dream of mine to make a shoe. I needed Nike’s expertise to create this sneaker to my specifications. And Nike needed Staple to create this shoe in a way that could not have happened within their corporate walls in Beaverton, Oregon. Hell, even if this was created at Nike, in exactly the same way, but instead of releasing at Reed Space, it was given to a sales manager and shown to national accounts like Foot Locker and Modell’s…it would have been totally different. I’m telling you, the planets aligned. But they aligned because we ALLOWED them to align. It’s part luck. But it’s also about creating the conditions for luck to happen—which is not luck. It’s preparation.

If there’s anything I can pass on from my experiences in this arena, it’s this: let the ideas come to you. Whether you’re a new jack just starting out or a billion dollar corporation trying to invigorate the product line with some energy—give yourself the time to get it right. Let the marination process happen naturally. The more you rush it, the shittier your steak is gonna taste. Your job though, is to create the conditions to allow for optimal marination to occur. Lay the foundation properly. And for chrissakes—TALK. IN PERSON. Meet. Break bread. Drink. Laugh. Poke fun. Have a good time. After all, you’re not trying to change the world—but hell, you just might.

One of the perks of working so close to Oxford Circus is the ability to attend daytime press events in the local vicinity during my lunch break. Chyea. Yesterday Nike invited me down to their UK flagship store to design a silhouette add to the NIKEiD on Oxford Circus, Nike Town. Anyone who’s been reading the site will know that I used to be quite the sneakerhead and buying iDs would frequently massacre my bank account. More on the reverse.

follow me on twitter

The new shoe that has been added to the customisable iD range is the Premium Edition Toki. It’s very refined Chukka-esque model, mid-high, with a gum sole. What makes this model that little bit more special? You can pretty much customise every aspect of it (excluding the lower sole). With the help of Matt, I naturally went for a brown upper, red inner, monsoon blue mid-sole plus a few other finer stitching details.

The colours? An on trend heritage based leather palette with a lot of browns and muted which gives it a classy feel. You can even customise eyelets and stitch details, I decided to keep it simple with mine and let the leather do the talking. I’ll photograph the results when my sneaker arrives in the mail. For now have a gander at the process images below. Check out the NIKEiD Facebook here.

With the sneaker world still recovering from the seizure caused by the Air Mag unveiling, this beautifully crafted Air Max 1 hyperfuse probably sent many into coma. No joke ting. I haven’t ever worn a pair, nor liked them till I came across the pink pair and now these. Lawd, the hyperfuse technology and minimalist look adds to its overall sneaker sex appeal. More on the reverse.

I know nothing about the history of the Air Max. It’s something I’ll read up on when I get a chance to. This sneaker was exclusively created for the England rugby team as part of a special pack which also contains Beats By Dre headphones that feature the English rose and Nike swoosh. The whole pack is SLICK, the all black everything look is perfect. NikeID have launched this limited edition England Rugby inspired sneaker to commemorate the team’s new 100% black change of kit to mark the start of the Rugby World Cup.

What really sets these kicks off is the Hyperfuse technology. The lack of stitching adds to the minimalistic look of the sneaker. The bold words ‘New Blood‘ in red are a nice touch, it’s a celebration of the fresh crop of youngsters in the Rugby team. Also if you’re very lucky, well if you play for the Rugby team then you’ll have got your hands on the pack that contain the sneakers and a custom pair of Nike x Beats by Dre with the iconic English Rugby rose.

A limited number of the kicks will be on sale at Nike’s 1948 store in East London this weekend for £125. GO GO GO.

Gosh, every blog in the world has posted about this before us. In fact a few readers have wondered why we haven’t already posted it – work deadlines. I’m sure you’ve all seen and read everything about the Nike Mag already but I felt compelled to post it. Not because I loved watching BTTF back to back in my younger years, though admittedly I’d be more than willing to use my life savings to get me a working Delorean. This sneaker launch really isn’t for the average ‘sneakerhead’ or the type who stupidly camp outside stores, it’s for the rich who are looking to purchase a piece of memorabilia. The plus side is all of the money raised will be dedicated the Michael J Fox foundation. More on the reverse.

follow me on twitter

For those who don’t know, he suffers from Parkinson’s. If you’ve known anyone that suffers from the degenerative disorder then you’ll know how depressing it is – it’s hard to sit back and watch their health depreciate right infront of your eyes. The inability to do nothing with all the technological advances we make on a daily basis shocks me so a few million from this campaign will only reap positives and hopefully take giant leaps in finding a cure.

I’m surprised Nike didn’t hold out till 2015 to launch the sneaker though, would have made more sense since it was the date in the film. Ah well, it’s all for a good cause so sooner they discover a cure the better.

I’ve compiled a plethora of images and videos on the Nike Mag below. My favourite has to be the extended advert which is meant to be a ‘Lost Scene‘ from the original Back to the Future films and characters. Nike went all out and got 2 of the original cast members, Christopher Lloyd & Donald Fullilove plus the likes of Bill Hader, Kevin Durant and Nike Mag designer Tinker Hatfield. It’s a really nicely done viral for the campaign which has pretty much blown up everywhere over the past few days. Excellent marketing as always between the mega brand and Wieden and Kennedy.

There will also be one pair available to buy at private auction in London on Sunday 18th September. Serious bidders should apply by emailing backforthefuture.london@nike.com and for those wanting to see this iconic shoe in the flesh, there will be a pair on display at Niketown London from Wednesday 14th September for five days. Will you be bidding for a pair? I need to win the euro millions to do so. Tinie Tempah won the first pair for 38.9k. The rest are on Ebay - click here. 150 pairs are to be sold each day. I’ll wait till 2015 when the self-lacing is supposedly going to drop :-.

Ah what a day, a long ass day . My left eye has been twitching all day, no idea why!? One of my colleagues said it’s down to tiredness, it’s probably that and the fact I stare at a screen for 10+ hours a day. Today was a little bit special, the lovely folks over at Nike invited us down to the private viewing of their exhibition with Arena Homme + magazine commemorating Arsenal‘s 125th birthday. Of course as a Gooner, I was certainly not going to miss this opportunity. The prospect of meeting a few players and reigniting my love for football lured me in. P.S. I wrote this on Thursday – should have posted last night but I fell into a 10 hour slumber as soon as I got home.

The Arsenal: 125 – Arsenal | Saatchi | Nike

I’ll be honest, I’ve been a bad Arsenal fan. A glass half full type of fan, I haven’t even watched MOTD or any of the games so far this season. With everything going on in my life, I didn’t want the Football results to ruin my mood. My mood affects my productivity, can’t be having that.

I’ve been supporting Arsenal for well over 15 years and not sure why I initially chose the red army. My family don’t really have much of an interest in anything sporty, aside from my uncle who was a die hard Liverpool fan despite residing in London. His reasoning was legit though, when he first came here in the 70s – the scousers were on top of the game. Arsenal weren’t the best team in the 90s but something about the way they played made me like them – the style, the elegance, the red and white kit with giant JVC branding and of course Dennis Bergkamp.

Football was a way of life for me during my younger years, it’s all I ever did. I miss the old Arsenal but talking about it won’t bring them back, I just have to support my team through it all. The exhibition made me realise that again. I need to

The exhibition is split into 2 areas – one with imagery of current players, junior gunners and fans. The Arena Homme editor explained how the entire exhibition is taken from a fan’s perspective, he’s a dedicated lifelong Arsenal fan himself. The photographs by the photographic collective DoBeDo are vibrant and dope, excluding the one of the semi-naked Asian model/player (not sure who he is?!). After all the unique photography and film, we got the chance to interview Kieran Gibbs on style, what it means to be an Arsenal player and the exhibition. We teamed up with @Murab from WeAreHQ for the interview, to be honest – he was the one asking most of the questions – my shoddy film work behind the camera.

The other room featured a 10 minute short film shot from a fan’s point-of-view. The film was split into 3 parts – one from a middle-aged fan, a youngster and a ‘Grandad‘ who has been supporting the Arsenal since the 60s. The clip shot by Greg Fay with the help of Ridley Scott Associates films positively portrays the team known for their style, youth, multicultural team and fanbase. One quote from the film made me realise why I love Arsenal and what it should be like when you support a team, surprisingly its from the 13 year old kid -

‘You don’t stop supporting a team just because they’re not winning. Then you’re a real supporter.’

AMEN.

If you want to headover to the exhibition, it’s open now at Saatchi Gallery. More details below.
