29th November 2010 – the date of the last Eargasms post, a weekly post which I started during the first week of Y&Y‘s launch. I had to give it up as the post took 3-4 hours to construct and I just didnt’t have that time any more with university so the post series was eventually locked away into the Y&Y b. It’s time to wipe off the dust and bring it back in a new format. 5 of our favourite songs from the week, each song hand picked by a member of the family. ‘Stranger’

Jhene Aiko (who I remember from the early noughties when she was part of the B2K camp) piqued interest across the internet back in March when she released her brilliant mixtape, Sailing Souls.

Champion of the romantic movement, Jesse Boykins III has given her mixtape cut “Stranger” the remix treatment, turning it into a gorgeous duet. Jhene’s ethereal vocals dance harmoniously next to Jesse Boykins’ soulful croon, making you feel like they’d had to have been in the studio together to create such goodness.

‘I Know You Want Me (Remix)’

DJB and Yang love their dancehall & bashment, me? not so much. I find it funny, like the beats but the vulgarity, overly sexually explicit lyrics and demeaning to women puts me off it. I do adore the beats though and the flow – always wished the dance hall artists would switch it up and make a few cleans songs to see how they do internationally. If Cher Lloyd can get to number 1, I don’t see why this wouldn’t!

R&B’s gentleman (sure!) Ne-Yo jumps on dance hall star Mavado‘s song and the result is infectious. What do you guys think?

‘Only Wanna Give It To You’

During my school, through to college years, I was absolutely obsessed with Hip-Hop and R&B collaborations. The fusion of a female vocalists delicate, sweet sound paired with a rappers overtly-masculine and sometimes aggresive lyrics remind me of long summer holidays, Calippo ice lollies, TN trainers and flasher bus passes. ‘Only Wanna Give It To You’ by soul singer, Elle Varner and rapper, J.Cole just took me back down memory lane!

Here J.Cole who fails to represent, his lyrics are somewhat shallow and cliche. However as an avid fan of his more underground, unsigned material, perhaps I’m too harsh! Regardless, Ella makes up for any of Jermaine’s shortfalls with her strikingly powerful voice! I look forward to hearing more from her in the near future.

It was in 2005 when I read a story on the MTV website about Jay Z signing Ne-yo, Teairra Mari, and Rihanna. Rihanna, Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, she was 17 years old when introduced to Jay-Z. At first thought, Jigga was not so sure on singing the Barbados singer, after hearing ‘Pon De Replay‘. Jay Z told MTV “I was like, that song is too big for her,” he said. “When a song is that big, it’s hard [for a new artist] to come back from. I don’t sign songs, I sign artists. Some people chase the hot song for a minute. I want to sign an artist based on a swagger, the level of talent, the writing. I was a little reluctant.

However Jay Z would soon have a change of heart. He was swayed once he met with her. The singer performed the song and it was then that Jay Z noticed a Star. Jay Z made his mind up on the 17 year old before she even sang a note as he believed there was something about her when she walked into the room. Co founder of Roc-A-Fella Records then, he knew that he could not let the singer leave his building without signing her. Contracts were being drawn up and it was at 3am that Rihanna signed on the dotted line.

3 months after signing for Def Jam, the singer released her debut album in 2005 ‘Music of The Sun‘. Pushing the album was the track that got her signed, ‘Pon De Replay’. The track is radio and club friendly, it’s easy to see why it was eaten up by young kids and teenagers alike. The song reached the number 2 spot in the UK and US. ‘Music of The Sun’ was a dancehall pop album, however only two tracks were released as official singles, the other being ‘If It’s Lovin’ That You Want‘ which struggled to match the success the debut single, by reaching number 36 in the US and 11 in the UK. Overall the album was a solid foundation to build on and a good effort for a 17 year old. The album was Certified gold in the US and charted at number 10. In the UK the album went gold as well, and peaked at number 35.

I enjoyed the Album and was very impressed by Rihanna. As Jay Z himself said, I do think there is something about the singer as I was just drawn to her. I can’t explain it, but I just wanted to see more. As was the case when I first saw Beyonce in Destiny’s Child’s first single ‘No, No, No, No’. Luckily it was not long to wait for another album.

A year later Rihanna was back with ‘A Girl Like Me’. A change was noticeable in her image, a sexier Rihanna was on our TV screens and this was evident in ‘SOS‘. This was the first single to be released off the sophomore album and was positively received by fans and critics alike. The singer had her first US number 1, the song peaked at number 2 in the UK. Rihanna would then go on to Release ‘Unfaithful’ which charted at number 6 in the US and number 2 in the UK. The singer was still looking for her first UK number 1 after four attempts. ‘We Ride’ the 3rd and last Single did not give Rihanna her UK number 1 as it peaked at number 17. In the US however, the song failed to chart inside the hot 100. The album itself was an improvement on a commercial level with sales over 1.3 million in the US and certified platinum in the UK.

Arguably the album that confirmed Rihanna as an international star was her third instalment ‘Good Girl Gone Bad‘ released in 2007. For me this is one of the best Pop albums to date as I don’t think there are any obvious filler tracks. The album was very successful and 5 tracks out of a possible 12 were released as singles, not to mention a further three which were included on the reloaded addition of the album. Jay Z once thought that ‘Pon De Replay’ was too big for the singer, but she conquered those fears with ‘S.O.S’ and so the bar was raised again. Que. the first song off ‘GGGB’ ‘Umbrella‘ featuring mentor Jay Z. The song was huge! It gave Rihanna her first UK number 1, and reached number 1 in the US. It went to number 1 in 16 out of a possible 27 charts that it was released in. The song went on to be the biggest commercial single Rihanna has released selling 9 million copies worldwide in 2007, and over 3 million in the US.

Fans were treated to a further three singles with ‘Shut Up and Drive’, ‘Don’t Stop The Music and ‘Hate That I Love You’ featuring Ne-yo. All charted well, but none gave Rihanna a number 1. All that was to change though.

The singer had released 3 albums in just 3 years, but the Success of this album meant she was not releasing another album in 2008, as ‘GGGB’ was re released on a double-disc deluxe edition, called ‘Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded’. From the album came a further two US number 1 singles, ‘Take A Bow’, which also topped the UK charts and ‘Disturbia‘ which peaked at the number 3 in the UK. Disturbia was also certified triple platinum in the US. The album sold over 2 million in the US, and over 1.5 million in the UK.

In between her own album, the singer lent her now obvious Star power on a track with self proclaimed King of The South, T.I. on ‘Live Your Life’ which charted at number 1 in the US, and went on to be certified three times Platinum. In the UK the track peaked at number 2.

By the time the singer released her fourth album in 2009, ‘Rated R‘, she was known as a global star, however due to personal events in her life at the time with her now ex boyfriend Chris Brown, fans were introduced to a different Rihanna. It seemed the days of the happy Rihanna were gone and now we would see a much harder side. Fans did not receive the album as well as her previous two and this was evident on the commercial front. The album was only recently certified platinum in the US. However critically it is the best album to date, and my personal favourite with tracks such as ‘Cold Case Love‘, ‘Photographs’ and ‘Stupid In Love’ being my preferred songs.

The released songs on this album, however were not as Chart friendly as the previous efforts and four of the five singles that were released failed to top the chart in the UK or US respectively. In the middle of the four released songs came ‘Rudeboy‘ which charted at number 1 in the US selling over 2 million copies, and reached the number 2 slot in England. The song showed fans the Rihanna they missed and the Rihanna they knew and loved. Back was the playfulness and the colour, and back were the number 1′s.

Even though many fans were not so welcoming to this side of the Singer, I think it was a very important stage of her Career as it showed such diversity from a young Artist. She wasn’t afraid to take a risk and try something new. Excuse the pun, but I rated Rihanna on another level once I heard this album. I was always a big fan , but this further cemented her as one of my favourite artists.

Now in 2010 we have LOUD! The first two singles have already reached the number 1 spot in the US. While ‘Only Girl In The World‘ reached number 1 in the UK, ‘What’s My Name’ featuring Drake reached number 2. The album has the same feel that ‘GGGB‘ had and the same amount of singles could be released off this effort. I won’t talk too much about it, as I want to save that for a later post in 2011.

Rihanna is a world wide star, and she has shown how strong she is as an artist and a female as she has Successfully released 5 albums in 5 years. Here’s to another 5 years, as I’m sure we will be seeing and hearing from her for a very, very long time.

Jessie J

Jessie J is sought after by some of the biggest names in the music industry. First she was approached by Britney Spears and her camp and now it’s the turn of Christina Aguilera and her team. Aguilera’s camp have reached out to up & coming singer-songwriter Jessie J for help on the diva’s upcoming fifth studio album.

Jessie who recently won the BRITs Critic’s Choice Award has already submitted material for the new Britney Spears’ album and is keen to write for Willow Smith after being contacted by 10-year-old’s camp, however she has yet to decide whether or not to agree to work on new material for Aguilera as well as weighing up the options of working with the X Factor.

“Christina Aguilera’s camp are asking me to do stuff and the X Factor camp, (ie. Matt Cardle). But at the moment, I want to save some songs for me.”

Ne-Yo

Ne-Yo has, commendably, come out and admitted that he made mistakes with his last album Libra Scale. Reflecting on the sales of the album in a recent interview with the BBC, the singer-songwriter admitted that the album was not his best, why he felt it didn’t sell like his previous efforts, and what his instantaneous plans are following the project.

“It’s just there was so much going on in regards to this album,” says Ne-Yo. “Writing the script, making sure it was good, shooting videos and being too hands on with the director, the artwork and everything.

Released in November, Ne-Yo admitted the album is his “poorest selling album to date.”

“I just wasn’t paying attention to certain elements in making an album that I normally would. My fans deserve my best.”
With that said, Ne-Yo has already started working on material for his forthcoming fifth album.

“I’m already working on my next album. I took two years off in between Year Of The Gentlemen and Libra Scale. I’m just going to get back to the basics and do what I do. My fifth album needs to be about the songs, I don’t have a theme as such yet, it will be what life is, the black white and grey – what it is to be alive – that’s what this album is going to represent.” Source

Keyshia Cole

In a recent interview with the Assoicated Press Keyshia Cole candidly spoke on her poor judgement in selecting ‘I Aint Thru’ as the lead single off her newly released LP Calling All Hearts.

NEW YORK – Keyshia Cole’s new album, “Calling All Hearts,” is out this week. It’s the follow-up to her first three albums, all platinum-sellers that had multiple R&B hits. But this time around, Cole’s lead single has not created a buzz for the singer like it has done in the past. “I Ain’t Thru,” which features Nicki Minaj, has only peaked at No. 58 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart.

Cole says she made the decision to release the song — though her record label disagreed.

“The label didn’t really want to drop the record because they knew … that people wanted a more intense, soulful record from me about love and I really should have followed (their) direction,” she said. “But I wanted that to be a statement record. It’s like saying, ‘I’m doing me, you know. I don’t have no regrets for nothing that I’m doing…..There’s no way to predict how people will respond to things,” said Ron Fair, chairman of Geffen Records. “It’s something that Keyshia really wanted to say.”

Cole is following up the song with “Long Way Down,” which she says “people are gravitating more toward” because of its mid-tempogroove and focus on love; the song was released to radio last week. Fair, who executive produced all of Cole’s albums, says though the pre-album buzz isn’t as strong as it has been in the past, he’s not worried about the new album’s first-week sales. “The record business is so perilous right now that it’s always, for me, a case of the tortoise not the hare,” Fair said. “What will be the ultimate judgment is where this record is in a year.” Source

Kim Kardashian

Rumors have been circulating that reality TV star Kim Kardashian will soon be making a foray into the music industry with the help of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. Ciara being a good friend of Kim’s and having worked with The-Dream and Stewart for the bulk of her lastest album Basic Instinct spoke on such rumours, indicating that the rumours may in fact be truth.

“She really, really is fascinated with the music-video process and stuff like that. She’s a very, very glamorous girl. She really loves that whole idea, and so she joked about [it] like, ‘I wanna shoot a music video … but I don’t want people to take it too serious. I would just like to have fun with it, ”

“Actually Dream had reached out to me too, and I was like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna hit her up.’ I know she talked about music before. She wasn’t all the way sure of it, but I said, ‘Hey, give it a try, go for it. If you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t.’ The cool thing is that you’re able to even experiment with that. Dream is a really, really great producer and writer, so that’s really cool that you get the moment to do that. So go for it. We had a lunch and we talked about it a little bit, and so I think she’s gonna give it a shot.”

“I think … she’s gonna have a little pop and I think a little attitude. She’s a girly girl [kind of] girl too, but she still has attitude,” she said. “I think it’s gonna be all that in her music.” Source

Sam Sparro

People might remember Sam Sparro for his #1 hit ‘Black and Gold’ as well as his infectious ’21 century Life’ well while he isn’t back with a new album just yet but in order to keep his fans occupied and his name still relevant he has given out a free EP titled Pink Cloud.

A music video have been released for his newest single of the same name and I must say I really enjoyed it. The song takes me back to the 90’s house scene with the funky beat and minimal vocals. The video is quite obsecure in a sense but at the same time it’s very fresh and creative which I guess suits the song pretty well. Peep the video below.

Today is the start of the week which usually brings in the highest sales volume of any week mainly due to the American tradition that is Black Friday. This year sees a huge clash of the titans in the music industry and we want to know who you think will win the big race. Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Ne-Yo and Lloyd Banks all have their eyes set on the #1 slot by the end of the week but with so many albums to choose from who will end the week with the highest sales figures? Most see the race between Minaj and her Pink Friday against Kanye and his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but it is important that those supporting them should not underestimate a certain Mr Bieber. I have a sneaky feeling that he will beat them to the post in an unexpected turn of events. Have your say and let us know who you think will triumph.

Meet Wakey!Wakey! is for the most part Michael Grubbs, as he plays piano and sings the vocals. However, the band is not a solo project and incorporates many more musicians to round out the sound, including strings, drums and horns. I spotted them on One Tree Hill and just had to get a few of the songs they played on the show. Imma share with ya’ll my favourite, the video for it is above.

Mainly because of the festive period so not many songs have been leaking. I’m gonna start things off with a new track from a chick called Shannell/SNL, apparently she’s signed to Young Money? I thought Nicki Minaj was the only female in the crew. After the cut for links and more.

She’s an Atalanta-born singer and songwriter and sister to former Danity Kane singer, D. Woods. Apparently she’s dating Weezy, I hope the chick has been taking birth control pills cos it won’t be long till we have another mini-weezy on planet Earth. This David Guetta produced track has a real dope beat, I can see this being a big hit in the clubs.

Remember this dude? Chingy! One Call Away was my tune back in the day in High school, never really had many hits  that i can recall after that though. Well you can’t really count ‘right thurrr’ as a hit, it was straight whack music. He’s back with another R&B/Rap song featuring everyone’s favourite midget, Bobby Valentino. The song is smooth, insanely catchy.
