This is the kind of Kid Cudi music I enjoy. A little bit extrovert, psychedelic and weird. Haha. WZRD is the latest project from the G.O.O.D. music artist Kid Cudi & producer-friend Dot Da Genius and they’re set to unleash their début collaborative project in January 30th. If the album is anything is like his mixtapes and debut record then I’m excited. This track has a horror film vibe with the heavy guitar, real drums and slowly built up vocals.

‘Ten to One‘

Shontelle has been likened with Rihanna on many occasion’s since stepping out with her debut ‘T-Shirt’ and although I think that they are two completely different artists. This latest song from the songstress does nothing to discourage the comparison. It’s the fact that she has moved away from what was a very urban sound to a dancy floor filling sound reminiscent of Miss Fenty. However this is not an official single nor will it appear on Shontell’s next album, it is purely a gift she gave to her fans on thanksgiving to showcase what sounds she has been experimenting with. It’t nothing groundbreaking but it’s nice to hear someone transition to a more uptempo sound without it feeling forced and copycat.

With motivational lyrics and a catchy hook, this track’s play count on my iTunes is guaranteed to rise very quickly. Favourite lyric – ‘The people united will never be defeated’.

‘Thank You‘

Estelle is getting ready to release her long awaited third album (Second in the US) All Of Me. After a few failed attempts at gaining buzz for the project including the release of the song ‘Freak’, she has finally caused a stir with her single ‘Break My Heart’. Now she is ready to follow up on it’s success with this new track ‘Thank You’ which was co-written by Akon. This song definietly songs like it was written by Akon in the way that she delivers her vocals but none the less I feel this is a SOLID song. A song that has got me even more intrigued to hear a new Estelle album. How long will we have to wait? Only time will tell.

Detroit rapper, Danny Brown of Fools Gold records recently released his mixtape XXX, and is hot news in America right now. His track Radio Song, produced by Brandun DeShay personifies everything I hate about modern day music in a 2-minute brave, explicit dedication to the music industry. Ironically titled “Radio Song” this song is a perfect introduction to what Danny represents incalculable, honest, intelligent rap music and is a welcome wake-up call for members of the “swag” movement!

It was just 5 years ago that the world was introduced to Big Sean. A very young ambitious Detroit native trying to get buzz on his music, his Detroit player swag, and put his city on the map.  After convincing one of Rap’s biggest artist that he was perfect for signing with a quick 16 bar freestyle at a local radio station in his hometown. Sean landed himself a record deal with G.O.O.D Music and Def Jam. Under his new home of a label he released a series of mixtapes entilted “Finally Famous“.  Creating a huge fanbase of folks fascinated with his Detroit player swag, clever rhymes, one word punchlines, and style. With massive praise on the tapes, this called for something bigger — an LP. And an LP is what we got. On 28th June Sean made it known that he’s set make his mark in the game and possibly be what Beyonce is to R&B, Big Sean can be to rap. Album review and favorites on the reverse.

I got into Sean’s music in ’07 by a really good friend of mine who kept talking about his music and his song Getcha Some.  With a look and listen at his song, my friend insisted that I download his mixtape Finally Famous. After listening I was sold that Big Sean was real. Downloaded all 3 mixtapes and listened to each one back to back but after listening to each one I kept wondering “When is the album coming?“.  My long overdue question was finally answered when 5 years later the album hit stores 28th June 2011. Being a heavy Big Sean listener it would be wrong of me to not buy the album that day. So I did via itunes and immediately began listening. By the way, I bought the deluxe edition with the digital booklet + bonus tracks and a physical copy as well. The deluxe edition is definitely a good look!

The album entitled “Finally Famous Over Everything” which happens to be Sean’s studio debut release. The album consist of 16 tracks with production by some high profiled folks like Kanye West, Malak, Jeff Bhasker, Mike Posner, No I.D., The Olympicks, Tricky Stewart, Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang, Boi-1da, Pop Wansel, Mike Dean, Exile, The Legendary Traxster, and The Neptunes. The LP serves to feature numerous collabs such as Pharrell, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, and Rick Ross to name a few. The album debut is a testament by Big Sean as well G.O.O.D  Music that with just a first try he can pull off a great album. Aside from the great production of the album it has some really good songs as well.  Here are some of my favorites on the album.

I Do It

You bordo like Enrique, I’m toupee, I’m three-pee. I’m looking like I’mma sweep stakes. But I treat ya girl like a cheap skate. Cause I need a crib, a big estate. I need a boat and that need a lake. I need some salmon, that need a plate. That need a chef so I feed my safe. My crew is who I’d be widdy-be-wid-it. Rose I sippity-sip-it. I’m Quagmire I fuck hoes. My cashflow I giggity-giggity it.

I really have to say I Do It happens to be in my top 5 of songs on the album. The punchlines in this one song is absolutely crazy! Punchlines after punchlines. I really don’t understand how he does it. Like, we’re a whole song consisting of punchlines. If you listen from 0:39 – 0:59. It’s sick! Very clever and tons of usage of his one word punchlines. Definitely a feeling yourself type of tune. It’s the type a tune you want to listening when you’re on top of your stuff.

So Much More

My dream girl is every night, my dream car is optional. My old school look like a T-Rex, I should feed her fossil fuels. My Man, I turn my enemies to molecules. Little hoes. Without any preparation, I exceed these expectations. Man, they wanna see me dead, but I gave them dedication. I’m yellin’ fuck ‘em all, with a hundred exclamations. Cause I’mma be the man til my fucking expiration.

So Much More is another one of those reflection songs on the album. It’s a “We made it” type of song. The shows a very accomplished and proud and side of Sean. A guy who had one of the shittest jobs of jobs, great grades, a college scholarship but because of a dream that he had that he would once make it big he threw that all away and look at where he is now. And I guess it is true if you have dream go for. Due to that his album is #1 in the US on iTunes.

My Last

Since I signed to Kan, I’m Louis Vuitton shine. Up in Benny Han Han eating all the Wonton. Rose rose over a little Chandon.

My Last is the smash single/debut single off the album which features Chris Brown. My Last is a song of reminisce and celebration as he looks back at having coins in his pocket, working as a telemarketer hoping to make it big. The song happen to reach #1 on the Billboard Music Chart in the Hot Rap Track category. Which is a good look for Sean. Great collab! Overall, a real smash.

Marvin & Chardonnay

Err’ybody rip the swag off. ‘Fore I rip the tag off. Why my pants sag off, cause I’m rappin’ my ass off. Flow so ugly, money so handsome. This the fucking anthem, get it, the fucking anthem -Kanye West

This song is absolutely hot. Needs little to no description on how good it is. The name says it all! Marvin & Chardonnay is among my top 5 on the album with I Do It. First, Roscoe Dash on a song with Kanye West and Big Sean. Epic! The song is crazy and a potential video song. The bars in this song is too much. Roscoe on the chorus which works for the song so well. And Ye his verse is so mean. I love it!

Memories Part II

Success is my idol and being broke is my rival. But it’s cool because I got the title hoe. See I just want my fantasies in real life. You got everything tell me what it feel like.

For those who’ve listened Sean’s last mixtape Finally Famous: Vol 3 which was good as well. You would know it’s the same song with a bit of a twist. Memories on FF3 happens to be more slower and features Sean doing the chorus. With this new version Big Sean calls for fellow G.O.O.D. Music artist John Legend to sing part of the hook, which he does a great job. I actually prefer this version. John Legend brings a bit more power to the song.

Rick Ross and Pusha T on a Big Sean track?! What? You already know it’ll be good. Now, I wasn’t always a Ross listener until my friend who introduced me to Sean’s music was like “O, Rozay is pretty boss” and I was like “Ahh, I think not. I’ll pass!” but after some of his tape I’m a Ross listener. The both on this track is dope. Pusha T who’s straight out of Virginia has this hardcore roughness in his voice. I love way he raps. He has this “I’ve seen it all” thing about and that “Yuck” sound effect he does. Love it! Pusha T on this track is crazy. And Big Sean kills his verse so hard. Pure dopeness!

Being an avid Big Sean listener, the deliverance of an album is great. To see his work being seen an put where it is now is commendable. Sean has allowed his fans to join his 5 year journey finally famous stardom. First thing I would  say is for a first album the work is really good. The production, the features, the overall look of the album. The album introduces you to the different aspects of Big Sean and Sean Anderson. You see a guy who wants to make it for himself because he wanted it for so long. It’s an album of fun, reflection, joy but more to say celebration. Celebration of being able to create such a buzz for himself as an artist and being at a forefront of rap right now. Another thing I would like to point out is his sharp delivery of wordplay and humor in his raps. It’s absolutely crazy! For a first album it’s sick. Tons of possible hot singles (i.e.: Wait For Me, Marvin & Chardonnay, Dance (A$$), Get It (DT), So Much More, High, Live This Life,  What Goes Around, Celebrity, and 100 Keys). I can truthfully say that there is no song that can’t be liked. It’s a very relatable album and showcases his amazing consistency in his work. It’s G.O.O.D Music at its finest! In conclusion, the album is totally worth the buy so grab yourself a copy of the album at your nearest music store or online music store.

Yeayuh. Lupe finally dropped the visuals for his 1st single off Lasers. Ya’ll already know it’s going to be one of the best albums of 2011 if it’s anything like the Cool on a lyrical level. This song is such a feel good anthem, very sing-a-long. The video follows the rapper through his journey from the dressing room to the strage, takes some CGI space detours on the way to the stage. The song has a positive message which is quite rare these days especially in rap music, peep the video on the flipside. Hope everyone had a good Christmas! but now back to work…the show goes on.

This is my song of the week. I downloaded it around 2am last night and since then it has already been played 20 times on iTunes. Yes I rinse songs like that. This song samples the guitar riffs in Modest Mouse’s ‘Float On’,  it’s just so infectiously catchy with the horns and the chorus has a sing-along feel to it. An all around happy ‘feel good’ song that puts a smile on my face despite the dull and gloomy weather outside. The show goes on, off to University I go.

God dayum. A new song from her husband leaked a few hours ago, I have no clue whether it’s a new single/unreleased track but it’s smooth, classic Robin. The tracks produced by the Neptunes.

Next up, I’m showing some love for UK artists for a change. Peckham-born MC Giggs dropped his sophomore album last week and the hype for it around these parts have been crazy. I thought I’d give it a listen after my twitterfeed was clogged up with tweets saying how good it was. It’s actually not bad for a grime artist, he’s stayed true to his style and hasn’t sold out like the rest of them. *cough*
