This weekend saw the 7th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival return to New York, the home and birthplace of Hip Hop – one of the most exciting, influential and popular genres of music in modern culture. Brooklyn Bodega are an organisation and online magazine who are committed to promoting and working with artists and influencers who stand for positive Hip-Hop – the movement are also the organisers behind the world famous Brooklyn Hip Hop festival, and this year they decided to team up with legend, Q-Tip for the event! The line-up included Hip Hop greats, both new and old including Q-Tip (of course), Kendrick Lamar, M.O.P, Marley Marl, Stalley and Ali Shaheed Muhammed. More on the reverse.

I used to live in Brixton for a year, between 2008 and 2009, my house mates and I were regulars in a variety of its clubs. The most popular place with us to shake a leg was Fridge Bar, we also tried out Mass and Dex, but never did we venture into Plan B. That was until 3 weeks ago when we went to the club on a Friday for the event Bump. Bump is brought to you by the same people behind the celebrated Bang Bang event.

Still a little annoyed about missing this event a fortnight or so ago. I blame this dissertation which I’m still in the process of writing. Sigh. AKS is without a doubt one of the best rappers in the UK right now, he raps about what is relevant, meaningful stuff. I don’t hear any lyrics about raping pregnant women, killing people or gold chains/whips. No digs at Tyler of course, heh. Other artists who performed on the night include Shakka, Kay Young and a few others! Catch the video recap on the reverse. Brought to you by Less Is More & Sistova. If you haven’t bought the EP, go do it now. Hop on the bus.

Bleh. I’m disappointed with this new Beyoncé single. I expected a LOT better than her but apparently this is just a demo version but can the real deal be that different? She just pon de floor 2 years late! all this girls talk is annoyingly repetitive throughout the song. This is a man’s world, who runs this world? Jay-Z #noilluminati haha. What do you guys think of the song? listen to it on the reverse, ya’ll can read the lyrics there too. I’m interested to see how different the mastered version will sound.

So we’re all intrigued to find out who else will be joining Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid on the US version of the X Factor. However Simon and Cheryl Cole might not be sitting on the judging panel by the time the UK begins its eighth season later in the year. This would be reminiscent to a UK act succeeding in their homeland charts and then heading over to the US to focus all their attention and energy across the pond to live “the American dream”.

So beautiful. Her voice that is, I’m already taken so not allowed to speak of other Filipino women in such a way. This is probably the first ‘proper’ video from the YouTube sensation Erin Paula featuring fellow internet star Summer Breeze. By proper I mean shot on a SLR and not a webcam/iPhone! I can’t say I have heard of this guy before but his guitar skills are dope and voice compliments Erin’s really well.  Oh I could listen to her all day long #nopervo. I swear nearly all the Filipinos that I have met in the past few months can sing?!?! Not fair. Video on the flipside.

‘Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing’ Not many artists could pull off what Jessie has pulled above. Jessie J’s just so raw, so much talent – her voice is just wow. I must have played this song more than 200 times in my iTunes and it still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. I definitely need to see her live again soon. She’s won a fair few awards and been tipped to do great things from BBC, MTV and various other publications so I’m pretty sure ya’ll are going to be hearing and seeing a lot more of her in the next 12 months. I hope she does the same in the London Underground somewhere, NYC folks were lucky. Be true to who you are. *clicks play again on video*
