Last week, I landed in Heathrow after a long 11 hour flight back from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and wanted to jump right back on the plane and go back! After spending 6 days in the city that Brazilians name “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvellous city), I am pretty convinced that it is now my favorite city in the world. Mountains, beautiful beaches, rainforests, lagoons, great weather, great food, beautiful people and a vibrant football culture are all aspects of Rio that instantly left an impression on me. The purpose of my visit was to attend and speak about global women’s football matters at  the annual Soccerex convention, which is a trade show dedicated to the businesses in football around the world. With the excitement in the air about the forthcoming 2014 world cup and 2016 Olympics hosted in Brazil, it was a great time to visit the land where football runs in the veins. Cristiano Ronaldo falls into the category of marmite. You either love him or you hate him. However for anyone who doesn’t like him but loves the beautiful game for all its power, skill, goals and drama-it will be difficult to deny that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world and perhaps to have ever played the game. Big statement, I know, but after watching this documentary on Ronaldo being tested to the limit, you may actually agree with me. I have always respected Ronaldo as a player but my respect has multiplied greatly after watching him put under a microscope for a series of intricate tests to determine why exactly he is a cut above the rest. I’m not going to lie, looking at his flawless bod was part of my entertainment too obviously!! YUM. Check the documentary on the reverse.

Ah what a day, a long ass day . My left eye has been twitching all day, no idea why!? One of my colleagues said it’s down to tiredness, it’s probably that and the fact I stare at a screen for 10+ hours a day. Today was a little bit special, the lovely folks over at Nike invited us down to the private viewing of their exhibition with Arena Homme + magazine commemorating Arsenal‘s 125th birthday. Of course as a Gooner, I was certainly not going to miss this opportunity. The prospect of meeting a few players and reigniting my love for football lured me in. P.S. I wrote this on Thursday – should have posted last night but I fell into a 10 hour slumber as soon as I got home.

I mentioned in my last post that I would be doing some reviews of the films I saw at the Kick & Screening football film fest in New York last week. Well, here is my first one, and a very powerful one to start off. Soka Afrika is a powerful film about the journey of two young African players who dream of a better life as professional footballers in Europe. The film brings attention to the common dream and journey that all young footballers share to become professionals. However a more poignant reality that the film so powerfully conveys is about the trafficking of African players into Europe by crooked agents. These agents give the players false hope, capitalizing on their dreams to their gain and then leave them stranded in a foreign land. More on Soka Afrika after the jump

For the last three days I have been completely in my element whilst attending the Kick & Screening soccer film festival in TriBeCa, New York. Obviously due to my football background and love for independent film, it is safe to say that this festival is right up my street! I have been blown away by all the films, shorts and documentaries and will be dedicating my next few posts to the festival itself and specifically some of the films I have been fortunate enough to see. I feel it is my responsibility to introduce you to the niche area of football in film. Like me, I am sure you will be intrigued. For now I will leave you with the absolutely breathtaking football animations by Richard Swarbrick that were showcased at the festival. It is art at its best! More after the jump

My inner geek. I’ve been playing football games for as long as I can remember – started off with the 16 bit game on the Commodore 64! I swear I won 18-0 in that game, was just too easy. I played FIFA 2011 at a friends house last night, won both games – only because I was on my friend’s team and he’s pretty good at the game. I’m a pro evo fan boy, it’s the one game I’ll always make sometime to play! I used to play it religiously during my high school years, matches before and after school  – sometimes even just before bed. That’s how excited I was over this game but it’s constantly let me down since PES6. Just like Arsenal. *cries* It’s time to make that big transfer….and start supporting United. Joke. I mean start playing FIFA. Check out the latest videos of PES 2012′s gameplay. It’s quite ‘meh’. Nothing new!

It’s always good to see young people taking a leap and doing some other than whats expected i.e school, college, university. When you’re passionate about something and feel not enough is being done, then sometimes you have to just do something about it and that is what S.C.O.U.T represents.
