PRINCE x New Power Generation

‘Mutiny/Ice Cream Castles‘

Prince and his long-time backing band, the New Power Generation dropped a new leak last week ahead of their Australian tour for which Janelle Monae and Delilah were just announced as support acts. The ten minute rehearsal clip features two of their tracks from the 1980′s, in a new funked up light, “Mutiny” and “Ice Cream Castles“. I love that this leak comes in the form of a recording from a live jam session with the band, can’t wait to hear more!!!

‘Fight To Win‘

Cee Lo Green, Khujo, T-Mo, and Big Gipp reunited for a rare Goodie Mob appearance last week, singing their new track, “Fight To Win” taken from their forthcoming album, “Age Against the Machine”. Donning (quite weird) golden samurai suits, the band performed the celebratory, high-energy track, “Fight To Win” to the USA’s The Voice audience, which included Andre 3000. The track is perfect for a big announcement, such as “we’re returning after 13 years of hiatus”…however it seems much more Cee-Lo than it does Goodie Mob! I’m off to go listen to some Soul Food….

‘Put It Down‘

Brandy returned to the music scene with her second duet with Monica on the track ‘It Belongs To Me’. Following the lukewarm success of that track she has unveiled the lead single from her forthcoming album 2 11. The new song ‘Put It Down‘ is something new and fresh, a sound we haven’t heard from Brandy before. Her vocals as always are on point but its the sass and the swag she has put into the song that makes it an exciting thing. With Chris Brown featuring the song is sure to hit many a fan and make its way onto the charts.

Eek, Nas and No I.D – what a combination. Here’s the second single from Nasir Jones’ upcoming project, dedicated to fathers with daughters and how it isn’t easy to raise a teen daughter. He opens up about his relationship with his daughter Destiny who has been um, instagram-ing photographs of condoms. Eeek. He’s even got a bar about the £1 billion dollar app in there, dope!

I don’t even know how to pronounce this artist’s name! My colleague at work played Yppah‘s latest project in the office last week and I think it’s fair to say everyone loved it. So chill with a mixture of shoegaze, various electronic music, psychedelic soul, and rock music. I don’t really know how to describe the music, it’s just really calm – listen for yourselves. It’s been a hot minute since we’ve done an album review, I believe the last time was actually a review of Nicki Minaj‘s debut album Pink Friday. We have decided to get more involved with album reviews and do them on a more regular basis. It just so happens that we pick up where we left off, with Nicki Minaj. Her new album Pink Fiday: Roman Reloaded is set to be released in a few days, April 2nd for UK/European fans and April 3rd for her US/Canadian Barbz. Nicki Minaj is riding the her highest wave of popularity at the moment with endorsement deals and demands for her appearance coming at her left right and center. Now seems a perfect time for her to release her poorly named sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

Let me start by stating that I absolutely hate the album title, it’s stupid, lazy and slightly confusing. When I first got wind of the title I thought that she was re-releasing her debut but I was wrong. Don’t even get me started on that hideous cover art *smh*, however let’s not dwell on this ridiculousness as there is plenty more to talk about.

The album starts with that crazy song she performed at the Grammys ‘Roman Holiday’ and yes before you ask the studio version of the song sounds just as crazy and her live rendition. Parts of the song are inaudible due to Minaj spouting all kinds of off key noises passing them off as lyrics. I’d say the first portion of the album (songs 1- 7) are what she meant by Roman Reloaded. By this I mean these songs are the more “hood” urban cuts on the record and usually her alter ego Roman is responsible for her urban records.

‘Champion’ featuring Nas, Drake and Young Jeezy is the stand out “hood” anthem on the album and is sure to do big things if and when it’s released as a single. ‘Beez In The Trap’ comes in second place, the simple snap yo finger beat and the uncomplicated flow goes off if played super loud. Oh and let’s not forget the albums name sake ‘Roman Reloaded’, another song that is sure to please her underground fans, the fans that remember mixtape Nicki.

From track 8 the album starts to lighten up and so the commercial switch begins, this is where alter ego Roman leaves the room and Nicki enters. ‘Right By My Side’ featuring Chris Brown and ‘Sex In The Lounge’ featuring Lil Wayne & Bobby V start the switch by moving away from hip-hop to a more R&B sound.

Track 10 through 18 are straight commercial cuts all geared to please her new fans that where acquired through the success of ‘Super Bass’ and most recently ‘Starships’. ‘Pound The Alarm’ is a certain hit. The funky electro cut follows the sound that we heard on Starships, I’m pretty sure that this will be released especially following the success of the already mentioned ‘ships.

‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Young Forever’ are my personal faves from the Pop portion of the album. Both songs I would love to see released and have accompanying music videos, however I doubt it will happen as Nicki tends to not release the tracks that I feel are single worthy. For example, I thought she should have released ‘Save Me’ from her debut.

Obviously as with any album there are certain tracks that shouldn’t see the light of day but I’m not going to dwell on those mishaps as everyone has there own tastes so what I like will be different to what you like………. Erm scratch that, ‘Beautiful Sinner’, ‘Roman Holiday’ and ‘Stupid Hoe’ should be eliminated with immediate effect!

Overall I think that the album is much less schizophrenic than I thought it was going to be. We all know Nicki has many characters that she likes to showcase however I feel like she only gave us Roman and Nicki, which I appreciate. Sometimes less is more. For me the album should have been packaged in a similar way Christina Aguilera presented her album Back To Basics. There are two clear distinct sounds on this album so separating them on to two different discs would have made so much more sense.

The album is not as cohesive as her first effort but I think that it was to be expected as she has two very different sets of fans. Trying to please both sets of fans was a clear goal for this album and while I do feel that she has crafted material that will achieve this, she has yet to master a way in which it’s not so obvious. Hopefully album 3 will be full of songs that both sets of fans will like rather than designating half an album to each set.

Do I recommend this album? ….. I think I do, if you’re a Nicki fan be it “hood” Nicki or Super Bass Nicki there will be a song for you. Although as a whole piece I think I’ll stick with the original Pink Friday.

‘Dose of Dopeness‘

If you’re a real Kid Cudi fan then you’ve probably had the 1-minute long live version in your iTunes library since July 2008. I have. Hoped it would drop with his first album but no, it didn’t. Two albums went by and still no sign of this Dot Da Genius produced wonder. Then it surfaces last week and it definitely lives up to the hype. Such a great song, Cudi at his best. WZRD out now.

‘Grew Up Fast‘

I love beats like this, sampling David Ruffin’s ‘Double Cross’ adds that souiful vibe to the song. He’s brutally honest in this track, summarises the state of the whole industry with this one line:

“It’s only right I brought back the soul/ Ya’ll got way too electro” 

Not sure if I agree with the metro/half way homo line but still a dope track. It made me go download the original sample in an instant!

CHRIS BROWN x RIHANNA

‘Birthday Cake (Remix)‘

If I’m talking purely about the music, it was one of the better tracks from Rihanna‘s ‘Talk The Talk‘ and lasting just over a minute (interlude) there needed to be a full track. The ‘Birthday Cake’ remix boasts senseless lyrics over a very danceable beat and I thought Chris Brown‘s inclusion on it was reasonable but hardly necessary. Never the less I love the song. In terms of the controversy surrounding the collab, it’s not the wisest of moves given that Chris beat Fenty to an inch of her life and also because once upon a time she was speaking against domestic violence. She’s supposed to be a role model for her younger audience, but the truth is if your a parent and you think pop stars are the perfect role models for your kids then more fool you!

Teyana Taylor is back with the second single taken from her hugely anticipated The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor EP. On this smooth groove, which features Jadakiss and Fabolous, it is clear to the ear that Taylor was inspired by Miss Janet Jackson. The little ode to Jackson is cute as is the song. Here’s hoping she has many more gems like this in store for us on the EP.

‘Elephant’ (No D/L)

Alexandra Burke performed an acoustic version of her upcoming single ‘Elephant‘ on That Grape Juice’s ‘The Splash‘. The original is a dance/electro track but she’s stripped it back and given a flawless vocal reminding me he great her voice is. Here is hoping that she’ll deliver more tracks like this and release some material in America where she’ll be appreciated!

‘Black Gold‘

After hearing  ’Chamber Music Society‘ and then seeing her live at The Barbican, I’ve been keen to hear some new material from Esperanza. Based around the theme of empowerment, ‘Black Gold‘ is a soulful track featuring Algebra Blessett and is taken from her upcoming album ‘Radio Music Society‘. While I love the song, after hearing it, I’m intrigued by what her new album will offer as the previous one boasted a stronger Jazz influence than this track.

‘I Love You‘

When it comes to sexy slow jams Chris Brown fully understands how to craft such a tune that exudes the necessary sultriness, sexiness and suggestive nature needed to pull it off. Examples include recent tracks such as ‘Wet The Bed’, ‘Like A Virgin Again’ and ‘Take You Down’. Having released the up-tempo lead single from his forthcoming fifth studio album Fortune to the world, this sexy love song found it’s way to the Internet this week.

As much as I like the song, I do have a slight problem with the over use of studio effects on the vocals. Chris can sing and I feel that the studio trickery takes away from the song rather than adds to it. His vocals sound muffled in parts which irritated me. This is either because of the over reliance on studio magic or it could be that it is a low quality, unmastered, unmixed version of the song that has been leaked. Although I don’t feel the latter is the actual reason.

‘Is Anybody Out There?‘

Both K’naan and Nelly Furtado had quiet 2011’s, but they make for a great collaboration on ‘Is Anybody Out There?’, the first track off the highly recommended K’naan EP, More Beautiful than Silence. With a simple piano melody, some fantastic vocals, and great lyrics, this makes for some easy listening. It may be a little too mainstream for fans of K’naan who will still remember the days of The Dusty Foot Philosopher, his first studio album. But that doesn’t make this any less of a brilliant song, and its message should not go unnoticed. Hopefully, we’ll hear more from these two talented artists in 2012.

NICKI MINAJ

‘Marilyn Monroe (Tags)‘

So it’s fair to say that Nicki Minaj hasn’t had the best start to this new album era. Her single ‘Stupid Hoe’ has been hugely criticized along with the album’s buzz track ‘Roman In Moscow’. Pushing the album back may have been the best thing to happen as she is now in a position to start the promotion and select the right songs to support the album all over again. This new track entitled ‘Marilyn Monroe’ has not officially been confirmed as an album track but this is definitely the right direction to go in if she wants to continue to have commercial success.

The song sounds very much like it has been produced by Alex Da Kid but I cannot confirm my suspicion at this point. The track wouldn’t be out of place on a Rihanna album, Minaj has go on record to say that she writes songs as well as bars and this just may well be a very good example. This is a leak so the track does have tags attached and is cut short but let me know what you think anyway. Is Nicki on to a good thing with this vibe?

‘Chasing Your Love‘

I don’t know what it is but I feel like John Legend is one underrated artist however at the same time I find him boring. He’s dope! yet boring…. Not really a good combination is it? Anywho check this new song ‘Chasing Your Love’, the intro to this song immediately made me think of ‘Gorgeous’ from Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is it just me?

The song starts off very interesting however doesn’t live up to my expectations after the strong intro. It’s not a terrible song and as ever Legend delivers a good vocal but as the song continues the boredom sets in zzzzzzzz.

‘Thinking Out Loud‘

Can someone please explain to me when Chris Brown found the time to record all of these songs? In the last year and a half we’ve had the release of his album F.A.M.E and the release of numerous mixtapes Fan of a Fan, In My Zone 2 and Boy In Detention. Now he is gearing up to release his second studio album, Fortune, within a year (5th overall).

‘Thinkin Out Loud’ is the latest track to surface, however it is unknown at this moment in time whether it will end up on the track listing for the album. Personally I think he needs to rein in these leaks now because he is getting a little too over exposed. Too many tracks that have his vocal are floating around. He especially needs to rein them in if he wants the lead singles, ‘Strip’ and ‘Biggest Fan’, from his new album to be a success.

Doh. I’m 100% certain that Burial debuted this on Youtube earlier this week before taking it down and giving it to Rinse FM to premiere. Now all we have to listen to his forthcoming ‘Kindred‘ EP is this radio rip with a chav talking over the start of the song. This is only a preview, the full track is apparently 8 mins long. Um, you’ll be surprised by who this quote is from. He goes by the name of Chris Brown – yep, the infamous R&B singer. Surprising huh? I couldn’t agree anymore with this quote. I’m all work-work-work most of the time, I love what I do so its fun but at the same time when 75% of your time revolves around work then there’s an issue. Last weekend was one of my favourites of the year, I spent a lot of it with my other half wandering the streets of London, shopping, cinemas  eating, etc. Not everything in life is necessarily enjoyable, but I think we all need to learn to have more fun in our lives. It’s good to take a break and enjoy the little things in life. Life is about living, not just about working towards your dream all day, everyday. Live a little.

Bieber fever is at an all time high and while the lil dude is in the middle of recording his next album, he is also in the middle of a little promo tour to support the release of his Christmas album entitled Under The Mistletoe. One of his promo pit stops was to visit radio station Power 106 where, in addition to talking about his festive offering, he treated listeners to a short freestyle over Jay-Z and Kayne‘s ‘Otis’. I say freestyle but he had preselected Otis as a track that he wanted to rap over so it could be that he wrote his rhymes beforehand but never the less the kid done a pretty good job. This is not the first time he has slipped on his rap hat, see here, and i’m sure it won’t be the last, who know he may even be the next Chris Brown. We all know he thinks he’s a rapper now lol, not that he’s bad at it either. Anywho see how Bieber fairs after the break.

‘Christmas Eve‘

Let me start off by saying that this song was written by Chris Brown. I bet now that I have told you that, you’ll be able to imagine Browns vocals all up on this track. It’s obvious that JB has simply gone into the booth and laid down vocals to resemble Brown (probably taking lead from the demo Chris recorded). That being said this song is actually pretty good. It’s refreshing to hear a Christmas song that has more than the novelty appeal, a song that could be played all year round without feeling outta place. To often people throw sleigh bells over a beat to emphasize its Christmas link, this song doesn’t do that and for that reason I really like it. Plus JB’s vocals sound more matured which is a bonus.

‘Let’s Roll‘

Kid Rock is the reason I like this song. He vocals on the chorus are just so good. I’m not saying that he is sanging on the track like he’s at church or anything but his tone for this particular hook matches really well with beat and the whole vibe of the song. Yelawolf is not too bad but for me he plays second fiddle to Rock on this one. This is the latest single taken from the often-delayed debut album from Yelawolf (which is now slated for a November 21^st release)

DAY 26

‘Made Love Lately‘

Many would have thought that Day 26 had sung there last song but this newly leaked song proves otherwise. Now performing as a quartet, the group are no longer guided by Diddy and his Badboy Record label and instead call Atlantic Records their home.  The song is cool, as expected the lyrical content is all about making love to a certain female but this song doesn’t offend so its all good. It’s good to hear the boys back on top form because behind all the drama that seems to surround Diddy and his manufactured groups (this includes Danity Kane) the groups actually work well together and have huge talent.

Simple mid-tempo track that honestly could have been taken from her last couple of albums, it just doesn’t sound that new to me. The song isn’t anything new or refreshing but as usual Mary sounds great, as does Drake. This song is neither crap nor great, it is what it is.

UPDATE: Having listened to the track a couple more times I feel like I need to write something positive about it. It’s actually grown on me in a short space of time and now I really like it. Rico Love is the man who penned this tune so it’s no wonder why I now like it because he seems to be writing nearly every track that I have or still do love in the last year or so (Think Usher‘s ‘There Goes My Baby‘ + many more)

Last week Estelle dropped some new material in the form of a mixtape, it hardly came as a surprise to me as she needed to do something since people have been expecting new music from her for around 2 years! She’s cheekily named it ‘AOM: The Prequel’ clearly hinting her new album ‘All Of Me’ is on it’s way. One of the songs that stood out for me is Remember Me, I thought it best showcased Estelle’s skills and why she is respected as an artist- so that’s why I’ve chosen it for eargasms this week.

Mrs Roc Nation calls on J.Cole to spit a verse on the remix of this Slick Rick/Doug E.Fresh sampled throwback song, courtesy of Kanye‘s innovative funk-inspired production. Taking Andre 3000′s place on ‘Party’, J.Cole completely switches up his flow, in a similar fashion to his ‘Nobody’s Perfect‘ joint. A bit of an unnecessary remix in my opinion, J.Cole doesn’t come his hardest…but then again neither did 3000.

Fat Joe is back with a new track called ‘Another Round’ whihc features RnB crooner Chris Brown. The song is a smooth groove that is esay on the ears but doesn’t scream greatness. As ever Chris does his thing and is probably the main attraction of the song along with the cool beat. Joey Crack does a good job too but honestly it could have been any rapper on this track and my reaction tot he song would probably be the same. I’d give this song 3 outta 5.

You may have already seen French Connection’s TV advert, recently premiered just during X Factor: ‘I am the Suit’, The company are known for their excessive efforts in print advertising so a television advert came as quite a shock to me. French Connection are also known for their wacky-ness and I have to say I was in hysterics when this popped up on my TV screen! The trailer which features ‘Michael‘ from ‘The Teenagers‘ aims to promote upcoming short film and also features the brands’ Autumn/Winter 2011 collection and a cover of Chris Brown‘s brash single Look At Me Now. So if you haven’t gathered why I would find this hilarious, it’s because I suddenly had a mental image of French Connections’ target audience collectively engaging in a karaoke session to this song…#SNM. Bottom line it’s a clever ad that will baffle you and force you to go watch again on youtube in order to attempt to make sense of it, you won’t… enjoy!
