ESPERANZA SPALDING

‘Black Gold‘

After hearing  ’Chamber Music Society‘ and then seeing her live at The Barbican, I’ve been keen to hear some new material from Esperanza. Based around the theme of empowerment, ‘Black Gold‘ is a soulful track featuring Algebra Blessett and is taken from her upcoming album ‘Radio Music Society‘. While I love the song, after hearing it, I’m intrigued by what her new album will offer as the previous one boasted a stronger Jazz influence than this track.

‘I Love You‘

When it comes to sexy slow jams Chris Brown fully understands how to craft such a tune that exudes the necessary sultriness, sexiness and suggestive nature needed to pull it off. Examples include recent tracks such as ‘Wet The Bed’, ‘Like A Virgin Again’ and ‘Take You Down’. Having released the up-tempo lead single from his forthcoming fifth studio album Fortune to the world, this sexy love song found it’s way to the Internet this week.

As much as I like the song, I do have a slight problem with the over use of studio effects on the vocals. Chris can sing and I feel that the studio trickery takes away from the song rather than adds to it. His vocals sound muffled in parts which irritated me. This is either because of the over reliance on studio magic or it could be that it is a low quality, unmastered, unmixed version of the song that has been leaked. Although I don’t feel the latter is the actual reason.

‘Is Anybody Out There?‘

Both K’naan and Nelly Furtado had quiet 2011’s, but they make for a great collaboration on ‘Is Anybody Out There?’, the first track off the highly recommended K’naan EP, More Beautiful than Silence. With a simple piano melody, some fantastic vocals, and great lyrics, this makes for some easy listening. It may be a little too mainstream for fans of K’naan who will still remember the days of The Dusty Foot Philosopher, his first studio album. But that doesn’t make this any less of a brilliant song, and its message should not go unnoticed. Hopefully, we’ll hear more from these two talented artists in 2012.

NICKI MINAJ

‘Marilyn Monroe (Tags)‘

So it’s fair to say that Nicki Minaj hasn’t had the best start to this new album era. Her single ‘Stupid Hoe’ has been hugely criticized along with the album’s buzz track ‘Roman In Moscow’. Pushing the album back may have been the best thing to happen as she is now in a position to start the promotion and select the right songs to support the album all over again. This new track entitled ‘Marilyn Monroe’ has not officially been confirmed as an album track but this is definitely the right direction to go in if she wants to continue to have commercial success.

The song sounds very much like it has been produced by Alex Da Kid but I cannot confirm my suspicion at this point. The track wouldn’t be out of place on a Rihanna album, Minaj has go on record to say that she writes songs as well as bars and this just may well be a very good example. This is a leak so the track does have tags attached and is cut short but let me know what you think anyway. Is Nicki on to a good thing with this vibe?

‘Chasing Your Love‘

I don’t know what it is but I feel like John Legend is one underrated artist however at the same time I find him boring. He’s dope! yet boring…. Not really a good combination is it? Anywho check this new song ‘Chasing Your Love’, the intro to this song immediately made me think of ‘Gorgeous’ from Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is it just me?

The song starts off very interesting however doesn’t live up to my expectations after the strong intro. It’s not a terrible song and as ever Legend delivers a good vocal but as the song continues the boredom sets in zzzzzzzz.

‘Thinking Out Loud‘

Can someone please explain to me when Chris Brown found the time to record all of these songs? In the last year and a half we’ve had the release of his album F.A.M.E and the release of numerous mixtapes Fan of a Fan, In My Zone 2 and Boy In Detention. Now he is gearing up to release his second studio album, Fortune, within a year (5th overall).

‘Thinkin Out Loud’ is the latest track to surface, however it is unknown at this moment in time whether it will end up on the track listing for the album. Personally I think he needs to rein in these leaks now because he is getting a little too over exposed. Too many tracks that have his vocal are floating around. He especially needs to rein them in if he wants the lead singles, ‘Strip’ and ‘Biggest Fan’, from his new album to be a success.

‘Ashtray Wasp‘

Doh. I’m 100% certain that Burial debuted this on Youtube earlier this week before taking it down and giving it to Rinse FM to premiere. Now all we have to listen to his forthcoming ‘Kindred‘ EP is this radio rip with a chav talking over the start of the song. This is only a preview, the full track is apparently 8 mins long. Not quite minimalist and chilled as your usual Burial track but I still dig it. Have a listen!

Um, you’ll be surprised by who this quote is from. He goes by the name of Chris Brown – yep, the infamous R&B singer. Surprising huh? I couldn’t agree anymore with this quote. I’m all work-work-work most of the time, I love what I do so its fun but at the same time when 75% of your time revolves around work then there’s an issue. Last weekend was one of my favourites of the year, I spent a lot of it with my other half wandering the streets of London, shopping, cinemas  eating, etc. Not everything in life is necessarily enjoyable, but I think we all need to learn to have more fun in our lives. It’s good to take a break and enjoy the little things in life. Life is about living, not just about working towards your dream all day, everyday. Live a little.

Bieber fever is at an all time high and while the lil dude is in the middle of recording his next album, he is also in the middle of a little promo tour to support the release of his Christmas album entitled Under The Mistletoe. One of his promo pit stops was to visit radio station Power 106 where, in addition to talking about his festive offering, he treated listeners to a short freestyle over Jay-Z and Kayne‘s ‘Otis’. I say freestyle but he had preselected Otis as a track that he wanted to rap over so it could be that he wrote his rhymes beforehand but never the less the kid done a pretty good job. This is not the first time he has slipped on his rap hat, see here, and i’m sure it won’t be the last, who know he may even be the next Chris Brown. We all know he thinks he’s a rapper now lol, not that he’s bad at it either. Anywho see how Bieber fairs after the break.

‘Christmas Eve‘

Let me start off by saying that this song was written by Chris Brown. I bet now that I have told you that, you’ll be able to imagine Browns vocals all up on this track. It’s obvious that JB has simply gone into the booth and laid down vocals to resemble Brown (probably taking lead from the demo Chris recorded). That being said this song is actually pretty good. It’s refreshing to hear a Christmas song that has more than the novelty appeal, a song that could be played all year round without feeling outta place. To often people throw sleigh bells over a beat to emphasize its Christmas link, this song doesn’t do that and for that reason I really like it. Plus JB’s vocals sound more matured which is a bonus.

‘Let’s Roll‘

Kid Rock is the reason I like this song. He vocals on the chorus are just so good. I’m not saying that he is sanging on the track like he’s at church or anything but his tone for this particular hook matches really well with beat and the whole vibe of the song. Yelawolf is not too bad but for me he plays second fiddle to Rock on this one. This is the latest single taken from the often-delayed debut album from Yelawolf (which is now slated for a November 21^st release)

DAY 26

‘Made Love Lately‘

Many would have thought that Day 26 had sung there last song but this newly leaked song proves otherwise. Now performing as a quartet, the group are no longer guided by Diddy and his Badboy Record label and instead call Atlantic Records their home.  The song is cool, as expected the lyrical content is all about making love to a certain female but this song doesn’t offend so its all good. It’s good to hear the boys back on top form because behind all the drama that seems to surround Diddy and his manufactured groups (this includes Danity Kane) the groups actually work well together and have huge talent.

Simple mid-tempo track that honestly could have been taken from her last couple of albums, it just doesn’t sound that new to me. The song isn’t anything new or refreshing but as usual Mary sounds great, as does Drake. This song is neither crap nor great, it is what it is.

UPDATE: Having listened to the track a couple more times I feel like I need to write something positive about it. It’s actually grown on me in a short space of time and now I really like it. Rico Love is the man who penned this tune so it’s no wonder why I now like it because he seems to be writing nearly every track that I have or still do love in the last year or so (Think Usher‘s ‘There Goes My Baby‘ + many more)

Taking Andre 3000′s place on ‘Party’, J.Cole completely switches up his flow, in a similar fashion to his ‘Nobody’s Perfect‘ joint. Joey Crack does a good job too but honestly it could have been any rapper on this track and my reaction tot he song would probably be the same. I’d give this song 3 outta 5.

You may have already seen French Connection’s TV advert, recently premiered just during X Factor: ‘I am the Suit’, The company are known for their excessive efforts in print advertising so a television advert came as quite a shock to me. French Connection are also known for their wacky-ness and I have to say I was in hysterics when this popped up on my TV screen! The trailer which features ‘Michael‘ from ‘The Teenagers‘ aims to promote upcoming short film and also features the brands’ Autumn/Winter 2011 collection and a cover of Chris Brown‘s brash single Look At Me Now. So if you haven’t gathered why I would find this hilarious, it’s because I suddenly had a mental image of French Connections’ target audience collectively engaging in a karaoke session to this song…#SNM. Bottom line it’s a clever ad that will baffle you and force you to go watch again on youtube in order to attempt to make sense of it, you won’t… enjoy!

In this new era Chris Brown has been releasing music left right and centre. We’ve had three mixtapes In My Zone, Fan of A Fan and In My Zone 2 with another to be released in the next few weeks. On top of this we have seen the release of his fourth studio album F.A.M.E which has gone on to be a huge success. With him offering up so much free music to us in the past its a shame that a new song that was intended for his next album Fortune has leaked her im not gonna lie i’m kinda glad it did. It was just 5 years ago that the world was introduced to Big Sean. A very young ambitious Detroit native trying to get buzz on his music, his Detroit player swag, and put his city on the map.  After convincing one of Rap’s biggest artist that he was perfect for signing with a quick 16 bar freestyle at a local radio station in his hometown. Sean landed himself a record deal with G.O.O.D Music and Def Jam. Under his new home of a label he released a series of mixtapes entilted “Finally Famous“.  Creating a huge fanbase of folks fascinated with his Detroit player swag, clever rhymes, one word punchlines, and style. With massive praise on the tapes, this called for something bigger — an LP. And an LP is what we got. On 28th June Sean made it known that he’s set make his mark in the game and possibly be what Beyonce is to R&B, Big Sean can be to rap. Album review and favorites on the reverse.

I got into Sean’s music in ’07 by a really good friend of mine who kept talking about his music and his song Getcha Some.  With a look and listen at his song, my friend insisted that I download his mixtape Finally Famous. After listening I was sold that Big Sean was real. Downloaded all 3 mixtapes and listened to each one back to back but after listening to each one I kept wondering “When is the album coming?“.  My long overdue question was finally answered when 5 years later the album hit stores 28th June 2011. Being a heavy Big Sean listener it would be wrong of me to not buy the album that day. So I did via itunes and immediately began listening. By the way, I bought the deluxe edition with the digital booklet + bonus tracks and a physical copy as well. The deluxe edition is definitely a good look!

The album entitled “Finally Famous Over Everything” which happens to be Sean’s studio debut release. The album consist of 16 tracks with production by some high profiled folks like Kanye West, Malak, Jeff Bhasker, Mike Posner, No I.D., The Olympicks, Tricky Stewart, Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang, Boi-1da, Pop Wansel, Mike Dean, Exile, The Legendary Traxster, and The Neptunes. The LP serves to feature numerous collabs such as Pharrell, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, and Rick Ross to name a few. The album debut is a testament by Big Sean as well G.O.O.D  Music that with just a first try he can pull off a great album. Aside from the great production of the album it has some really good songs as well.  Here are some of my favorites on the album.

You bordo like Enrique, I’m toupee, I’m three-pee. I’m looking like I’mma sweep stakes. But I treat ya girl like a cheap skate. Cause I need a crib, a big estate. I need a boat and that need a lake. I really have to say I Do It happens to be in my top 5 of songs on the album. The punchlines in this one song is absolutely crazy! Punchlines after punchlines. I really don’t understand how he does it. Like, we’re a whole song consisting of punchlines. If you listen from 0:39 – 0:59. It’s sick! Very clever and tons of usage of his one word punchlines. Definitely a feeling yourself type of tune. It’s the type a tune you want to listening when you’re on top of your stuff.

So Much More

My dream girl is every night, my dream car is optional. My old school look like a T-Rex, I should feed her fossil fuels. My Man, I turn my enemies to molecules. Little hoes. Without any preparation, I exceed these expectations. Man, they wanna see me dead, but I gave them dedication. I’m yellin’ fuck ‘em all, with a hundred exclamations. Cause I’mma be the man til my fucking expiration.

So Much More is another one of those reflection songs on the album. It’s a “We made it” type of song. The shows a very accomplished and proud and side of Sean. A guy who had one of the shittest jobs of jobs, great grades, a college scholarship but because of a dream that he had that he would once make it big he threw that all away and look at where he is now. And I guess it is true if you have dream go for. Due to that his album is #1 in the US on iTunes.

My Last

Since I signed to Kan, I’m Louis Vuitton shine. Up in Benny Han Han eating all the Wonton. Rose rose over a little Chandon.

My Last is the smash single/debut single off the album which features Chris Brown. My Last is a song of reminisce and celebration as he looks back at having coins in his pocket, working as a telemarketer hoping to make it big. The song happen to reach #1 on the Billboard Music Chart in the Hot Rap Track category. Which is a good look for Sean. Great collab! Overall, a real smash.

Marvin & Chardonnay

This song is absolutely hot. Needs little to no description on how good it is. The name says it all! Marvin & Chardonnay is among my top 5 on the album with I Do It. First, Roscoe Dash on a song with Kanye West and Big Sean. Epic! The song is crazy and a potential video song. The bars in this song is too much. Roscoe on the chorus which works for the song so well. And Ye his verse is so mean. I love it!

For those who’ve listened Sean’s last mixtape Finally Famous: Vol 3 which was good as well. You would know it’s the same song with a bit of a twist. Memories on FF3 happens to be more slower and features Sean doing the chorus. With this new version Big Sean calls for fellow G.O.O.D. Music artist John Legend to sing part of the hook, which he does a great job. I actually prefer this version. John Legend brings a bit more power to the song.

Rick Ross and Pusha T on a Big Sean track?! What? You already know it’ll be good. Now, I wasn’t always a Ross listener until my friend who introduced me to Sean’s music was like “O, Rozay is pretty boss” and I was like “Ahh, I think not. I’ll pass!” but after some of his tape I’m a Ross listener. The both on this track is dope. Pusha T who’s straight out of Virginia has this hardcore roughness in his voice. I love way he raps. He has this “I’ve seen it all” thing about and that “Yuck” sound effect he does. Love it! Pusha T on this track is crazy. And Big Sean kills his verse so hard. Pure dopeness!

High – Big Sean teams up with some familiar past collab artist Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang to make folks think about getting high. High! High! High! A really good track but I don’t smoke so may never know this “great feeling“.

Being an avid Big Sean listener, the deliverance of an album is great. To see his work being seen an put where it is now is commendable. Sean has allowed his fans to join his 5 year journey finally famous stardom. First thing I would  say is for a first album the work is really good. The production, the features, the overall look of the album. The album introduces you to the different aspects of Big Sean and Sean Anderson. You see a guy who wants to make it for himself because he wanted it for so long. It’s an album of fun, reflection, joy but more to say celebration. Celebration of being able to create such a buzz for himself as an artist and being at a forefront of rap right now. Another thing I would like to point out is his sharp delivery of wordplay and humor in his raps. It’s absolutely crazy! For a first album it’s sick. Tons of possible hot singles (i.e.: Wait For Me, Marvin & Chardonnay, Dance (A$$), Get It (DT), So Much More, High, Live This Life,  What Goes Around, Celebrity, and 100 Keys). I can truthfully say that there is no song that can’t be liked. It’s a very relatable album and showcases his amazing consistency in his work. It’s G.O.O.D Music at its finest! In conclusion, the album is totally worth the buy so grab yourself a copy of the album at your nearest music store or online music store.
