Had a blast in Belfast at the EMA’s thanks to Dell and seeing everything backstage was a great experience, however it didn’t compare to seeing the arena filled with hundreds of people and then actually watching the show! Unfortunately I wasn’t permitted to take photos so they took my camera until the end of the show. Seeing as I didn’t get a chance to take any photos, I’ve used photos here from MTV’s website. If you followed the commentary on our twitter page then you’ll know what I thought of the show. Here’s a few highlights from the show.

Selina Gomez made a great host, to present to an arena full of people televised must be nerve racking or a 19 year old! But she was really confident, she sounded great and her personality came across too- not one of those robotic presenters!  Performance wise… not my cup of tea. Her and her man and their teenie boppy style wasn’t doing it for me. The Biebster who picked up 3 awards that night sung out of tune but danced to a satisfactory level.

No but what was Lady Gaga wearing….? Why is she so weird, seriously she needs Holy Ghost water fe cleanse her! The satellite picked up 4 awards, best song, best video, biggest fans and best female! I suppose all well deserved since she can’t really be faulted in terms of her craft.

Top performances for me were Jessie J, Lady Gaga and Queen ft Adam Lambert. Jessie J mainly because she sounds great live and she got the crowd moving. I wasn’t particularly a fan of Gaga but after seeing her live I can understand why so many people love her off. She has a great voice and strong stage presence which means she delivers the kind of performances that make you watch her in awesome wonder. Queen would obviously steal the show, although only 2 of them are still alive, they performed with Adam Lambert (who looks terrifying) as their lead vocalist.

Other champions included Bruno Mars who won best push and best new…seems like he’s been ‘new’ for a long time but OK. His performance of ‘Marry Me’ was great, really enjoyed the 60’s swing vibe…given that I’m actually about 70yrs of age.

As of Thursday 31st of March you will all be able to register for free tickets to Radio 1’s Big Weekend. The event will be taking place in Carlisle, Cumbria on the 14th & 15th of May 2011. You can tune in to Scott Mills on Radio 1 from 6.30am on Thursday for more information.

Registration opens Thursday and will close on the 7th of April at 7pm, but it won’t matter whether you register on the first or the last day. There are 10,000 pairs of tickets that will be given out for each day. Last year around 480,000 people applied for tickets so demand is expected to be high this year as well.

However even though tickets are random, those who live in Carlisle, Cumbria and the surrounding area, including the Scotish Borders and North East of England, will be favoured. This is due to the local area always being given preference each year, as was the case with last year in Bangor as well as previous years, Swindin, Maidstone, Preston, Dundee and Sunderland. Therefore a smaller amount of tickets will be allocated throughout the rest of the UK.

As I mentioned above, last years event was held in Bangor with performances from the likes of Florence & The Machine, Dizzee Rascal, Alicia Keys, MGMT, Example, Tinie Tempah to name just a few. The acts were spread out on four different stages and I really admire the setup with the stages. There is the ‘Main Stage’, ‘In New Music We Trust’, ‘BBC introducing stage’ and the ‘Outdoor Stage’.

This years main stage includes acts such as the Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Jessie J, Bruno Mars, The Script, Katy B, My Chemical Romance and The Wombats to give you just a few names of who to expect should you be lucky enough to win tickets.

2010 has gifted us with some really great songs. Thankfully many have come from UK artists. However, I am sure that if I was to ask all of you what you think the 3 most popular songs of the year are, I’d put my money on it that ‘Just The Way You Are‘ a ‘Fuck You’ by Cee-lo Green and ‘Nothin’ On You’ feat B.O.B would make the cut. Well, all songs have my man of the moment Bruno Mars in common—the newcomer who I think has taken 2010 by storm. More on the flipside.

Admittedly I got annoyed with ‘Just The Way You Are’ and ‘Fuck You’ after hearing it a thousand million times. One song I can’t get enough of though is “Grenade”- another hit that is responsible for turning me into a Bruno Mars fan. What a tune!! The song, even without the video has a visual element to it that conveys love in such a great way. Don’t know about you, but when I listen to the song you imagine someone ‘catching a grenade’ and ‘jumping in front of a train’ to show their love for another. Even if you can’t see it, I am sure everyone can relate to being willing to do anything for someone they care about.

Anyways, don’t wanna turn this into a love therapy session! – guess my point is that the music of Bruno Mars has a genius layered simplicity to it that both guys and women can relate to.

In fact, Bruno Mars says his album “Doo-wops & Hooligans” is inspired by the simplicity of old R&B Doo-wop music. Just in case you didn’t know the “Doo-wops” are for the girls and “Hooligans” are for the guys- again an intended effort to make his music relatable to both sexes. After searching the internet to buy “Doo-wops & Hooligans”, I am a little confused but have come to the conclusion that the album has not been released in the UK even though it was released in the US in October. Strange. Yin seemed to think it may be a legal issue. Well, dammit Bruno hire me as your lawyer, I’ll sort it out!

You can buy the album here for $9.99 or wait for the album to drop in the UK, apparently at the end of January. Pre-orders for the UK release can be made on iTunes. Mars also announced his Twitter yesterday that his 2011 European tour would start in March. Hopefully I get tickets to see this dude live because if the videos below are anything to go by it will be a great concert!

2010 has been a great year for music here in the UK and across the pond in the US. In the UK there have been breakout stars such as Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding and Plan B . From the US Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj and Drake all had a successful breakout year amongst many others.

For my artist of the year that broke though in the UK I would have to pick Plan B. I really like him as an artist as he’s shown such diversity. The Plan B myself and others knew before this year is a very different one to the man that released ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks‘. If you haven’t got the album yet then I would suggest you go into your iTunes store and buy it now. The album introduces us to another talent from the artist, born Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew, his singing voice. The album has been described as “Smokey Robinson miraculously meets Eminem”! I always have time for an artist that take risks and shows such versatility. Have a listen to ‘Charmaine‘ off his first album ‘Who Needs Actions When You Got Words‘ and then ‘I Know A Song‘ from ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks‘ and tell me your not impressed.

My favourite to come out of the US is much harder as I honestly could not choose between the three artists I have listed. I  have all the albums and so I’m deciding the US artist of 2010 based on my favourite album of the three. That accolade would have to go to Mr Bruno Mars who I can say is one of my favourite male singer in the music business. Definitely in my top 3 of male singers along with Danny O’Donoghue from ‘The Script‘ and Ryan Tedder of ‘One Republic‘.

I was into the 3rd song on the album and after the first verse of ‘Our First Time’ I knew this album was going to be one of the year’s best and this was confirmed once I had finished with track 7 ‘Talking To The Moon‘  and I still had another 3 songs to listen to. This is quite rare because out of mainstream artists such as Chris Brown or Trey Songz, the only male singer in the r&b/pop world I could listen to and not skip a single track on the album would be Ne-yo, although I’m yet to really delve into ‘Libra Scale’. I’m delighted Bruno Mars has received the recognition he deserved from ‘Doo Wops and Hooligans’ by having 7 Grammy nominations as well as the commercial success the album has gained thus far.

Now onto 2011, where the question is “which new stars will we be the next big thing to come out of the UK and US? I’m going to select two artists from the UK and two from the US and say who I think are safe bets to have a great year in 2010 and then pick one artist form each of the countries that are more of a wild card as to their success in the next year. However nothing is set in stone so it will be interesting to keep checking up in regards as to how their careers pan out.

Also it would be great to get your feedback on how you thought 2010 was and who we should look out for in 2011.

The Killers were one of the first rock bands that I fell in love with during my high school years. I think it’s because of The OC that I first became a fan! Brandon Flowers‘ vocals are instantly recognisable so when I heard he had gone solo, I just had to give the album a listen. Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars promising career hit a donkey in the road this past week when he was arrested early Sunday morning in Las Vegas for suspicion of possessing drugs. He was then taken into custody at approximately 2:40am after security guards at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino supposedly confronted him in one of the bathrooms where they discovered the narcotics.

TMZ has learned that the ‘Just The Way You Are’ singer had indeed been in possession of drugs, to the tune of 2.6 grams of cocaine which was discovered on his person by the Hard Rock Hotel security team.

It seems that in the modern day era if you are to become a popstar then it is essential to get busted or at least be seen in and around the use of cocaine. It’s almost like they give you a record deal and a bag of coke, this is just too much now. See Soulja Boy and that nappy headed one (the one with the big doo doo dreadlocks) from Pretty Ricky

Although I may joke about this currently, I would like to take a more serious tone and state that I think it is very irresponsible for these artists to be caught with this shit all the time. They have many many fans, some of which are very young, who look up to and admire and even aspire to emulate so getting caught with drugs and having it spread all over the news or internet is completely and utterly sending the wrong message to those young fans.

I understand that they are human beings and that they two can and will make mistakes but when you have such a high profile job you should be more aware of the affect that you have on people and therefore should act accordingly. Source

Lyfe Jennings Is Going To Jail Again

Lyfe Jennings has said his goodbyes to the music industry at least for the time being. The RnB crooner has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The sentence comes after his 2008 domestic dispute with his baby mother. He was charged with the firing of a weapon and leading the police on a high speed chase (like something out of Grand Theft Auto)

His lawyers were hoping to escape with just a year however this is not the first time that Mr Jennings has been in trouble with the law which played against him when the judge handed him his 42 month sentence a fact that he acknowledged in his final words before jail.

“I did it. I gotta be punished for it and I just want the opportunity to apologize,”

A remorseful Jennings told the judge as he fought back tears in the courtroom. The 37-year-old singer thanked his fans in his last tweet before facing his jail time.

“This will be my last post. To everyone who gave me a chance I am forever in your debt…..I have had a fabulous career because of you. All I can say in parting is that I have been honest with yaw. I didn’t sugarcoat a word didn’t hold back a single syllable of my life from yaw.”

Prison life won’t come as a surprise to the singer as he previously severed a 10 year sentence for arson. I guess some people just do not learn their lesson do they (Lindsey Lohan springs to mind)

Side note: Does anyone find it funny that he is in jail for beating his wife when he just release a song call statistic which talks about how some men are just crap for women but he isn’t LOL. Check the track out below.

Beyonce New Single Coming Soon

Moving onto a more positive story, this week we got given the news that the queen of RnB & Pop music today is ready to make a return to the radio airwaves sooner than we may have expected. Producer Los Da Mystro took to his twitter account where he did more than hint that a new Beyonce single is on its way. Check what he had to say.

“Listening to new B record Dream wrote….Fucking insane! Wow! She about to kill the game again! Had to listen again!! Ya’ll will see in 3 weeks!”

After been harassed by a herd of B’s fans he then went on to further throw all our hopes up in the air when he semi retracted his previous statement.

“Thats what they saying now. But it is the music business. It could be sooner or later”

I know it hasn’t been that long since B stated that she was to spend of that money take time off before she released a new album but I do feel it’s time for her to come back now. The industry doesn’t have many females that can naturally step in while she takes her break and a good enough job so that we don’t miss her. She has to get back on that horse and show those other bitches how it’s done.

November Releases

Nicole Scherzinger is set to release a new single titled ‘Poison’ sometime in November. The song is produced by producer of the moment Red One. He has managed to create a slew of hits in the last 12 months (think Lady Gaga) so it will be interesting to see what he can cook up with miss Scherzinger.

Ciara has gone on record to say that her new album, which has been delayed a number of times, will definitely see the light of day in November. I for one am glad that we can finally expect the record because i’m quite interested to hear what see has to offer us this time round.

She has just wrapped up the video shoots for her two new singles ‘Gimme That’ and ‘Speechless’ so be on the lookout for those to be released soon.

Bonus Track

To round up this post I would like to present you will a bonus track for your listening pleasure. The track comes from Travis Barker (remember Blink 182) featuring The Cool Kids. The track titled ‘Jump Down’ is to be taken from Barkers debut solo LP Give The Drummer Some.

I cannot wait for his album to drop. An album full of feel good anthems rather the sex-filled songs that R&B seems to be plagued the genre at the moment.

I finally got around to editing the video, well just adding a little watermark logo over it. You know how long it took just to render that? an hour. SMH. However it was worth the wait, Bruno Mars killed the song. He sounds exactly like how he does in the studio version, such a beautiful song. It’s not the best of angles but it’ll do, we got in late! video on the flipside.

The official video for my favourite song of the summer just dropped. Bruno Mars‘ video for his first single off his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans which is slated to release on October 5th. I love the video, it’s crazy creative with the tape! inspired by the artwork of Erika Iris Simmons (I’ll post her work soon!) and directed by Ethan Lader. Do ya’ll recognise the girl? I’m really good with faces and if I’m right she’s the chick off Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, Nathalie Kelley. Video after the cut.
