Weekly Wisdom - We are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be whole.

The use of social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter and media sharing sites such as YouTube and Tumblr have certainly revolutionised the way news and information has been reported and shared within the last couple of years. Events from the London riots of last summer and Arab Spring through to the strategic use of YouTube by the charity Invisible Children to publicise their ‘Stop Kony 2012’ campaign this year have shown just how powerful such sites are becoming. We are now in an era where news is able to spread throughout not only the United Kingdom but the World within just seconds – a fact that has revolutionised the way we communicate not only news but our thoughts and feelings, websites such as Tumblr being a prime example.

I’m a day late with this post! Apologies. Arriving home at 11pm on Sunday night after the Northern London derby means only one thing – BED. Not exactly. Bed at 1am but just didn’t have enough time to get this post out. Without further a do, I present to you Eargasms. Apologies in advance for the songs without links!

If there’s one thing I love, it’s hearing new up and coming artists. I introduce to you A.L., a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from East London who’s just put out a 16 track EP. Titled ‘A.L. Vs. J Dilla: The LB EP (The Laid Back EP)’. The young singer is not going round for round on verses with the late legendary producer, what she is doing though is singing and rapping over 16 produced beats by Mr Dilla. A brave move you might say, but one, which triumphs here.

A bit of a shame I didn’t catch London based Daughter, 21 year old singer/songwriter Elena Tonra straight off the mark. But to then proceed to miss her show back in December at St Giles at The Fields Church, didn’t make me fell any better. On one of my rummages through the forest of music, I stumbled across a video of her singing “Run” on the tube (subway). Her crystal clear harmonic vocals combined with the simple strumming of the guitar, got me. I wanted to know more, “Landfill” off her debut EP His Young Heart (Apr 2011) greeted my anticipation of curiosity.

Neo Soul, Jaazz flows from the heart of a gem: with notes coming fourth like an instrument from the wall of her soul” – Tophaz

And with that I introduce you to twenty-three year old Mrs Lisa Turner, but its Tophaz to you and I. Rarely are there vocalists, I found, that have the ability and talent to cover songs and personally embroider them. With control, skill and rousing awareness, bodied with individuality, its refreshing to say the least. Nor will I do the predictable and draw compares, a list of who she may sound like. As it really would be quiet unnecessary in this case as I believe she has her own little thing going on. More on the reverse.

Everyday I spend hours on end listening to music, so I thought I would write up a post every week where I select 10 of my favourite songs from the past week. I don’t necessarily mean songs that have only been released that week, I just mean sharing with you 10 of my favourite songs from the past week that I’ve played. Feel free to comment on the chosen songs and maybe share your own.

The arrival of the fresh and undeniable sounds of Odd Future member, Frank Ocean, has finally hit London Town, and I couldn’t be more hyped. Having finally announced a set of headlining tours via his tumblr, the intimate setting of XOYO was selected for his sold out UK show (which funnily enough is where Jessie J performed for my last review), perfect for housing the soothing vocals of Mr Ocean. Having started at 9pm sharp, he had already impressed me with a feat many artists often take for granted – being ON TIME. But it didn’t stop there, despite performing entirely in solo i.e. no band, backup singer, hypeman or instruments and just a guy pressing play on a laptop, he had us hook line and sinker.
