A bit of a shame I didn’t catch London based Daughter, 21 year old singer/songwriter Elena Tonra straight off the mark. But to then proceed to miss her show back in December at St Giles at The Fields Church, didn’t make me fell any better. On one of my rummages through the forest of music, I stumbled across a video of her singing “Run” on the tube (subway). Her crystal clear harmonic vocals combined with the simple strumming of the guitar, got me. I wanted to know more, “Landfill” off her debut EP His Young Heart (Apr 2011) greeted my anticipation of curiosity.

“Throw me in a landfill
Don’t think about the consequences
Throw me in the dirt pit
Don’t think about the choices that you make
Throw me in the water
Don’t think about the splash I will create
Leave me at the alter
Knowing all the things you just escaped”
This of course made me more curious, then before, as I just wanted to hear more. To confront my suspicions that I wasn’t being over zealous for no reason.“Love” presented itself, it’s soundscape was brooding and harrowing, the words simple but so heavy and broached with elegance. At which point all suspicion fell to the waist side, and Daughter’s Bandcamp became one my top visited pages in October. Her ‘The Wild Youth’ EP which included tracks “Home”,”Medicine”,“Youth”, it became my soundtrack, it was just so intoxicating. I think my family thought I was going though a deep emotive period as it was on constant replay, becoming the soundtrack to my every motion.
Since her start Daughter has expanded to include her boyfriend Igor Haefeli on guitar, who joined the mix in November 2010. Elenor states Igor as the person who adds the “texture” to her songs where as Remi Aguilella who is new to the fold contributes the percussion and with that, that’s Daughter.
