Lenny Kravitz has put out a total of 9 consistent studio albums his latest ‘Black and White America‘ which hit the shelves a couple of months ago, is easily my favourite album in a very long time. It isn’t brand new material I know and I should have reviewed it but I didn’t! After the break I present 3 valid reasons as to why I think you should purchase this album!

Firstly this is one of those albums that you can listen the whole way through and there is a song in there for every mood however my main point is that the album is heavily versatile. It hosts a healthy range of genres like 60′s funk, soul, rock and even a hint of R&B. The album boasts a range of eclectic tracks, it shows how skilled Lenny is as an artist. Tracks like “Life Ain’t Ever Been Better Than It Is Now”, “Sunflower”, “I Can’t Be Without You”, “Liquid Jesus” and “Boongie Drop” speak for the range of all the genres on the 16 track album. Have a listen to Sunflower, a break-beat inspired track featuring Drake…I’ll be honest and state that Drake was not required on this track- he wasn’t needed.
Black and White America is not just about showcasing Lenny’s skills as an artist, it sends out a message. The album explores social, political and racial issues that will challenge you and make you think, but this is side of the album you will appreciate after you listen to it numerous amount of times. Music that challenges you and forces you to think is pretty scarse in the mainstream nowadays so ironically this is something new. Listen to the title track ‘Black and White America’ the funky 60′s rock and roll inspired track where Lenny sings about America’s black and white divide and growing up being of mixed ethnicity.
I respect Lenny Kravitz for being an all round artist because he writes, composes and produces his own music from backing vocals right down to the chords. Although Lenny has harnessed a more simplistic style of writing, I think it works well on this album. That been said, better lyrics could have made a stronger album- his song writing skills are not on parr with the rest of his skills.
Anyone who has a broad taste in music and likes soul, funk and rock should give this album ago, I guarantee you would like it. So… convinced? Check out my favourite track from the album.
