Having been founded in 1843 on July 10th the New of The World tabloid newspaper will cease to exist. The closure of the paper comes in wake of serious claims of malpractice by some of the staff that work behind the scenes to get this paper ready for publication every week. Allegations of phone hacking going back as far as 9 years have come to light and with many of the papers integral members of staff either resigned or under investigation it is clear that these Allegations are not unfounded. It’s being reported that over 4000 people have been hacked by people working for the paper many of whom are celebrities and even some Royals. The sad fact of the matter is that with the abrupt announcement of the paper’s imminent termination a large number of people who will loose their job would have had nothing to do with the scandal. As previously stated the paper is set to end publication on July 10th however it is being speculated that the paper will just take form under a new guise and could possible return the following week under the name ‘Sun On Sunday‘. It has been reported that the name Sun On Sunday was registered on Tuesday July 5th. If this is to happen, which it more than likely will, do you think the new paper will be able to operate and become as beloved as its predecessor once was.
If i’m totally honest I am a little skeptical about the whole situation. The abrupt ending of the NOTW will come as a shock to many, who may not take to a new newspaper so soon after one that they once loved suddenly disappeared. In addition, I highly doubt that wiping away the NOTW name will wipe away the memories of its tarnished reputation so the fact that the same people will be involved in producing this new paper doesn’t bode well for its immediate success. Over 2 million people read the NOTW and it remains to be seen what effect this scandal will have on its successor but only time will tell.
