Weekly Wisdom - We are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be whole.

‘They say I am up and coming like I am fucking in an elevator’, is one line out of Ed Sheeran’s single ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’ that demonstrates the intelligent wit that is a running theme throughout Sheeran’s music. I have become increasingly intrigued with Sheeran over the past year and can now say I am a fan of his music. The primary reasons being his layered lyrical content, unconventional writing structure and for the best reason as he says he is not a product of any genre. You can hear nuances of indie, acoustic soul, hip hop and grime in Sheeran’s music and that, for me, it is what makes Sheeran so exciting. Check out the video after the jump.

The video ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’  directed by Emil Nava (who also directed Jessie J‘s three video releases to date) is an interesting one. I guess if someone would have asked me what to expect from a Sheeran video, the word that would immediately spring to my mind would be unconventional. Well it certainly lived up to that in my opinion. I can’t quite say I can put a finger on what the concept behind the video is.

Interestingly you only see Sheeran at the end of the video and are almost teased by shots of his shadow throughout. Instead you see an interpreter of the songs’ lyrics throughout. From the start of the video I was waiting in anticipation to actually see Sheeran appear- clearly this was the whole point!  Since this is quite a visual and thought-provoking video I’d be interested to know your take on the video concept and how it links to the song? But for now take a look at the video. Don’t forget Sheeran’s debut album + will drop this forthcoming September.

Ciao for now!
