Weekly Wisdom - We are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be whole.

So earlier today I was invited to the Nike 6.0 event in DAGENHAM. Yes that’s Dagenham in Essex, the place right next chav-ville Romford. Quite surprising that Nike held an event so close to my part of East London, it’s the only reason I actually decided to go. I should have been working on my essay but this BMX event sounded interesting and I definitely made the right choice by going to check it. I have no real clue about the BMX world – only know of Mat Hoffman and that’s because of the old console games he released. Heck I haven’t even rode a bike since I was about 10, so no interest whatsoever but my gawd, some of the tricks these guys were pulling off were jaw dropping. I’ll speak more on the event and why it’s happening in Dagenham after the cut.

Nike have killed it with this project. They transformed this former public swimming pool into a world-class BMX park. The Pool is a unique brainchild of Nike’s 6.0 – they invited down ten riders to choose teams consisting of three other bike riders who all competed against each other today for a grand prize of €25,000 Euros.

“This invite-only event will present a new competition format and demonstrate the unfeasibly high standards that BMX park and street riding have reached in 2011,” says Nike 6.0.

The contest was a one off thing yesterday and for the remainder of the 4 weeks, The Pool Project will be open to everyone.

“Riders of all abilities need to be quick as this fantastic building is set for demolition. The Pool will be free to ride, take lessons or just watch the action with local school sessions starting on May 16. The 4-week program of core events, community interaction and beginner workshops run through to June 12 with bikes, supervision, pads and helmets available for those who need them,” says Nike 6.0.

I would give you commentary on the actual contest but I have no clue about BMXing! honest. Here’s the list of captains for you readers who actually know a thing or two about the sport:

Garrett Reynolds, Dennis Enarson, Harry Main, Jason Phelan, Alex Kennedy, Ruben Alcantara, Brian Kachinsky, Drew Bezanson, Van Homan and Sebastian Keep

I’m going to leave you guys with a visual treat, some of my photography from the day. Not my best, mainly because I had to keep switching between lenses. It’s so annoying! I missed out on so many great shots because the lens at the time was either too zoomed in/out. Lame. Enjoy.

Bravo Nike.

What these guys do with their BMXs are insane. They must be mad for risking their lives like this but I respect for doing what they love.
