It’s been a while again since my last advertising post, the semester is almost over for me and the past few weeks I’ve barely had any classes so I haven’t really been checking advertising much. The only advertising I’ve really been posting are the World Cup related ones, I’m on that WC hype. As usual, I’ve picked out my top 3 adverts from the past week. Peep them after the cut.

1. Durex: Baby App for iPhone
This is amazing. Durex just dropped a dope iPhone app that replicates what it’s going to be like to care for a new born child. It’s genius, the app will alert you and annoying the hell out of you just like a new born will. It’s definitely going to help some dudes realise what the duties are involved when caring for a baby, should be a scary reality check for them next time they attempt to have sex without a condom. To make the baby crying and having to feed it all the time you will have to buy a pack of Durex condoms for the QR code. Clever.
2. Nike : Write The Future – Print Adverts
As you may already know I used to be a wallpaper designer, no not the sort you stick on your walls. The type that you right-click and click set as desktop background. Football wallpapers were my thing back then, I devoted a lot of spare time during my A-level years on that. I posted the videos from this latest campaign from Nike a few weeks back and here are the print adverts. It’s exceptionally well-made, I’m actually a bit jealous that I never thought of the statue idea back when I was designing wallpapers. The campaign is trying to tell players to play to be remembered, one moment of magic at the WC can result in statues being erected for them. I guess they shouldn’t use the Drogba one anymore seeing as he’s been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
2. Young Lions - Brazil
The Young Lions Competition (previously known as the Young Creatives competition, which started in 1995) is open to advertising professionals up to 28 years old working in teams of two. The competition takes place during the festival week in Cannes in four divisions: print, cyber, film and media.
In the print competition, an art director and a copywriter are given 24 hours to create a print ad to promote a charity or organisation chosen by the Young Lions Competition. Print teams consider this “brief” overnight and have between 08:00 and 20:00 the following day to create their ad. The cyber competition is structured in the same way, with teams comprising a copywriter and a web designer.
In the film competition, teams of two are given two days to create a 30-second commercial. The media competition, added in 2008, challenges teams to develop an innovative media strategy within a budget of $1,000,000.
This is an entry from one of the Brazilian teams. It’s absolute genius, I love the whole concept. Going to advertising agencies with your below standard/poor work and getting rejected but then getting a hypnotist to change their minds so they like you work. This deserves the award, no one in my class came up with anything this good. Damn you Brazilians!
More next time,
Yin
