Today is Dr King Day in the United States which marks the birth date Dr Martin Luther King Jr. It’s a day that unites people of all nationalities and teaches us to love our fellow man because as Dr. King once said ‘at the centre of non violence stands the principle of love’. Dr. King devoted his life to the causes of equality and social justice so that we today may live in a better place.
He is truly inspirational to me not only because I am a black young woman striving to do more with my life but because his words, effort and passion kicked down the doors that hold us back from unity and success. I have come across many struggles in my life due to the fact I am a woman of colour but that has in no way stopped me from pursuing my dreams and pushing for a better future. How I see it, we can both show each other love, respect and live how Dr. King envisioned as brothers and sisters, or we can perish together as fools. For me 2010 is all about stepping up to the mark, fighting for love and leading the way for our children.
Tamia Gaines, a fifth grader student at John Neely Bryan Elementary School in Dallas Texas recently gave a winning speech about what she can achieve in her life time because of what Dr King achieved in his. Her determination, words and the charismatic way she speaks really touched my heart. In fact she speaks very much like the President himself. (Check out the vid).
‘Dr. King kicked down the door, so I could walk through’
Y’all need to watch out for her in future, she’s gonna be one hot pistol with a mouth like that.
Peace out,
xoxo
